Default My First Mill - Hurco KM5 Issues

    Hello,

I picked up a 1991 Hurco KM5P and set it up in my garage a few months ago. It has Ultimax II control with Yaskawa servos and controllers and I have been happy with it so far. It's my first mill, and my first CNC. Prior to this my only experience was with retrofitted Bridgeport's in college. Compared to those this thing seems much more robust, more so than I need. And the electronic enclosure takes up more real estate than I hoped - crazy how far electronics have come. But, hey, it seemed like a good deal that I couldn't pass up. I have been using it with conversational programming on the screens. I know it's an old machine, but it has some issue that I want to see if can be fixed. None of them are really detrimental though. My real goal is to get to be able to N/C program. I'm guessing my best way to N/C program is to save to a floppy on my computer and then load it into the machine to download. As I understand, RS232 is another option, but I dont even know where to start with that.

Here are the issue I've noticed using the machine.

    1. The floppy drive doesn't seem to work. The light on the drive comes on, but I am unable to read any floppys or hear it spinning. The Hurco just says it's empty when I try to read. I tried connecting the drive to my computer with a floppy to USB adapter, and I can hear it spin, but I am unable to read any of the floppys. Not sure if this means a bad floppy and/or drive. Any suggestion to try here? Is it possible to use one of those digital floppy drives to replace the Sony it has?

    2. The machine always boots to a start screen (shown in image) that I must type 999 to reboot and then have to relearn the axis defaults. Also, any program/tools in memory is lost. I am fairly sure this has to due with the battery back up. But the place I bought the mill from mentioned it was an external battery that plugs into the board and not the CMOS battery like I've read about. Do I just need to buy a battery and plug it into the "TB11 BATT" plug on the board?

    3. The cooling (mist and flood) buttons do not work. When I click the button, the associated light next to the button does come on. I know the MAC valve for the mist cooling is fine, and I can manually trip the relay for the flood pump, so its like the board isn't seeing the button as pressed. Also, I noticed there is a relay board in the main enclosure that lists mist and flood, but the associated light with the relay never comes on with the button. Not sure if there is some configuration wrong within the machine?

    4. The "Back" button doesn't seem to work. Not sure if this it tied to any other issue, so thought I'd just mention it. I haven't tried taking apart the board to see, but all other buttons seem to work.

Any help on what to check or where to look on these issues would be really helpful. Also, any insight or suggestion on how to get N/C working on Ultimax II with a Win 10 laptop would be great!

For the floppy issue I mentioned above, I am thinking about getting this: GoTEK SFR1M44-U100 3.5 Inch 1.44MB USB SSD Floppy Drive Emulator.

Has anyone had luck getting a Floppy Emulator to work with their Hurco? Anything I should look out for?

Max 2. The floppy drive isn’t a high density drive, it’s a double density. Try covering the second hole on the disk with tape and format it on the machine.

I am not sure I understand where to put the tape. I attached a pic of a floppy and my drive. It is a Sony MFD-11W-L3.

On the diskette, there is a hole with a slider for write protecting the disk - the hole you need to cover is on the opposite edge. Do a Google for DSDD disks and look at a pic of how it should look.

I taped up one of the holes and tried it, but no luck. I always get the ERROR: DISKETTE NOT IN DRIVE OR DRIVE NOT READY. Tried both plugs on the harness for DRIVE 0 and DRIVE 1. Maybe all the floppies I have are bad? I don't really have a way to test them.

Some things I noted: The drive has a green light on the front that comes on as soon as I put in the floppy. And it looks like the floppy is always spinning when its in. I noticed that when I first start up the machine it says DISK DRIVE PRESENT: YES regardless of if the drive is plugged in or not.

So I bought a usb floppy emulator like I linked above. That didn't work. The machine did respond a little differently, but no luck. In the process I learned I can't load NC files to the Hurco using the floppy, so I am scrapping the whole idea of trying to get the floppy to work.

Anybody have a pinout diagram for the DB25 connector on a Hurco? I am trying to get the rs232 port to work now. I got a usb to DB9 adapter, and a DB9 (female) to DB25 (male) null modem cable. But I want to verify the pinout before plugging it in. Any help?

That manual shows the machine has a DB9 connector. My KM5 with Ultimax 2 has 2 female DB25 ports. I guess I could assume the machine is pinned like the DB25 computer connector in the manual and just try that out. Hopefully that wont cause any irreversible damage lol.

...do yourself a favor and just buy a Null Modem Cable DB25 to DB9 with your type male or female connectors. Also, that USB to Serial Adapter you will trying to use may or may not work. Test it on something else 1st before trusting it to work on the CNC.

    good luck,
    DJ

...I think this is the battery you mentioned is missing after doing some googling.

Some photos of your CNC control broads inside etc would be nice. I think the Hurco CNC controller you have has the Autocon/Dynapath build for Hurco back in those days. So, there are some Config Files you should backup asap most likely. Something like a PLC Exec, and a MTB File. that makes the machine run. The files would have been on Floppy disk from when machine was new from Machine Tool Builder (MTB). You most likely did not get those FDD's from who ever you purchase machine from. When you get your Rs232 working you can store those files on a PC for safe keeping.
