Default 2006 Super Mini Mill Vector Drive Repair Canada

    Hey Guys,

I have a 2006 Super Mini Mill 20HP in my home shop.

I'm running it off a Phase Perfect Phase Converter.

When I start up I get Over Voltage and Under Voltage Errors.

The SC Bus Voltage starts at 80v and slowly climbs to 260+ but it took almost 4 hrs to do so.

I was told it may be the Vector Drive.

I know I can get a Refurb / Repaired unit from Illinois area. But I am located in Toronto Canada.

I was wondering if there are any companies up here that do this work.

HFO wants $5,500 for a new unit

    Any help would be Appreciated!

So you are running a vector drive or VFD off of a Phase Perfect 1ph to 3ph convertor.
What happens to the Phase perfect when placing a small load on in place of the VFD?
Second look I guess it is the VFD that is slow in comming on?
My guess it is either the 3ph rectifier and/or the Capacitors.

I didn't know there was a difference between a Vector Drive and a VFD.

THe Phase Perfect is supplying 3 Phase power directly to the Machine.

Machine has a 20HP Vector Drive.

When I got the machine running after 4 hours of waiting for DC Buss to reach voltage I didn't hear any change in the PP. The PP doesn't
Have a Digital meter so I can't know exactly the draw.

I ran the spindle from 500rpm up to 2,500 to warm up and get lubricant flowing. It hasn't been run in a month.

If you just power up the VFD without placing in Run, does it still take the same amount of time for the DC buss to come up?

I'm not sure how I would just Power up the Vector Drive.

I just turn the machine on and it comes up with errors for Over & Under. I can't do anything after that until Alarms Clear.

Alarms only clear when DC Buss gets up to voltage.

Maybe there is something I'm missing.

It sounds very much like the Capacitor bank may be shot.
About the only two items in the DC buss is the 3ph rectifier and the caps.
How are you detecting the low buss, by direct reading or a LED Ind light etc?

The only way I can tell the DC Buss is low is direct reading off the Diagnostic Screen showing voltage.

And so if it displays the actual voltage that starts at 80v a voltage reading at the DC buss as it leaves the Bridge should confirm it.
There is a company in your area may be able to help. N.American industrial North American Industrial
If you get really stuck I could take a look with no promises, I am in the midwest so not very close.

I can put a meter on the VFD terminals and check that the screen and DVD are reading correctly. I was reading up HAAS Vector Drive Trouble shooting guide.

    https://diy.haascnc.com/reference-docs/vector-drive-troubleshooting-guide

North American is literally 10 mins from my shop! That's great! I will be giving them a call first thing tomorrow morning and see what they say.

    Thanks AL!

I have used them for some Fanuc repairs, the two guys that started it were ex-Fanuc techs.

    CCF,

I have a 2005 Super Mini Mill running off a Phase Perfect converter like you.

About a year+ ago, I had a strange under voltage alarm on my machine -- can't remember the exact alarm. I was dreading the cost of a new or rebuilt Vector drive, so I disassembled mine part of the way. It was very dirt inside. I ended up pulling the top one or two boards off their mounts slightly so I could look around, and blew all the dirt out of it while I was in there. After looking inside, I thought that I should probably just send it to someone that's repaired a lot of them instead of tackling it myself.

I put it all back together, and on a whim, I installed it back in the machine before sending it out just to see if anything had changed. Worked perfectly! Machine has been running just fine for 12-18 months, without a hiccup.

Heck if I know.... but saved me a good amount of money!

Hey Al, I gave them a call this morning. I asked them if they work on Haas machines, they said "No we don't work on those machines they are just cheap garbage." Well there was no other conversation after that so thanked him for his time.

That's too bad, I know when Tom and Andy both started up on Jane st Toronto, they were always obliging.
I guess you did not try taking just the VFD in to see if they would take a look at it?

No I figured I'd call first before taking it out. I'll call back and see if their willing to look but by the sound of the conversation this morning he really doesn't like Haas.
