I am new to cnc lathe work, learning it as I go and all. I have a job that is going to require threading a piece of 1 inch for 1-8 NC threads. I'm doing this on a Haas TL! and have been using the Visual Programming for most of what I've done so far. I have tried some test threading on it using the VPS and the info in t he workbook but so far it hasn't turned out right. I am wanting to thread these so I don't have to run a die over them of if so take a minimum off with it. Right now the pieces are turned to 1.001 or so diameter. Could someone post a code that would get me close to finishing like I want.? As in how deep per pass and final depth and all. I realize I may have to make minor adjustments but I would like to start close.

You will need to be more specific
what type of material
type of coolant used
length of thread
type of threading tool being used crest forming or not crest forming
any coatings on the insert
what class of thread 1a,2a or 3a
all these will make a difference in what kind of answers you will get
Yes I realized that after I posted but am just now getting where I can reply.
Pre hardened A2 steel.
Coolant is Cutter water soluble oil.
Length of threads is about 1 1/4 inch.
Threading tool is a kennametal carbide single point with I believe Tin coating.
If have to look at tap to find class.
Roughly what would your first pass depth be and how mamy passes? I know Ill probably have to tweak it some bit if I can get close it will help.
I would start with 0.005'' DOC on the first pass, and back off the step down on subsequent passes, with a final pass at 0.000 step down for a cleanup. Maybe about 12 passes or so.
Prehard A2 is going to add another layer of complexity to this, it will work harden if you look at it wrong. Prehard A2 requires an aggressive feed to keep from work hardening, so in this case, since the feed is fixed by the thread, you will have to adjust the DOC/pass.
I would start with a piece of 1018 CR shafting to get the setup correct, then switch over to the A2 and adjust the cutting parameters until it comes out like you want. You might concider getting annealed A2 and heat treat after machining. For setup, 303 SS machines a lot like annealed A2, and is a lot less expensive.
