    Default Scanning large thermoformed parts

    Hi Folks;

    A customer of mine has been vacuum forming thermoplastic automotive louvres for years and wants to move away from making wooden moulds

    To do this we plan to buy a 3D scanner and export a scan of a car back window to SolidWorks and create a 3D part file and a model of an epoxy mould

    My main concern is the resolution of the scan and whether this will be an issue in creating a mould that can produce useable parts

    There are tons of scanners, from the low resolution iphone types all the way up to $60,000 GOM and Zeiss German models.

    How much scanner do i need ? Does the resolution matter that much when matching the surface created in a wooden mould ?

    Any input would be most appreciated

    It may be a lot cheaper to have them scanned for you in the proper resolution than experimenting with the wrong scanner and the wrong software. He's a pro
