Question about manufacturing products from thin materials

This question is more for my education really, I don't have plans to do this just yet.

If a company was to manufacture products from thin materials (<2mm), what automation machinery exists to do that? Or rather, what automation machinery exists that can manufacture from thin sheet materials (ex. plastics, wood)?
