Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.
Hello All,
My name is Chris and I have been lurking here over a year as I prepared to quit my job, order equipment and start up a shop.
I've spent time as a manual machinist, service technician, business partner and project manager for an OEM in Oil & Gas. Looking to put all my skill sets together to start a small shop specializing in limited production knives among other things. Happy to join this community of talented people!

Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.
Rekd,
Back in high school I took machine shop. After the Marine Corps I was hired as an apprentice service technician and we rebuilt the worst condition machines the OEM could find. Sort of became the shop machinist then. Lot of years working as a service technician on other peoples equipment - both for the OEM then self-employed. Got into managing projects in Oil & Gas (again other people's equipment) until I finally decided I'm going to make things myself since I'm always complaining about how poorly designed or built all the stuff I worked on was!
I don't have any illusions to it being a short path to success but I'm going to enjoy the adventure : )

Hello,
My name is Martin Toavs, I am a high school vocational agriculture teacher. I joined to get tips and tricks to use our hypertherm cutmaster 101 plasma cam table. We also have a variety of machines which I use to conduct classroom and shop classes.

Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.
Hi I'm Nick from the Land DownUnder.
I work as a Civil Engineer but have an interest in cnc machines and only have a small T8 Engraver from HobbyKing which is a nice Unit to start with.
I am using Inkscape to do some modelling and it also does the G Code which is great, and then use Grbl to run the machine, a bit of a learning curve but not so bad.
I have not really used Cad programs to 3D model with, although I am familiar with Autocad 2D through my work. I suppose I will need to use something like Fusion360 for making models for what I am about to get.
I am thinking of buying the Omiocnc X4M-USB machine 4 Axes version which looks like a good quality machine, unlike some of the chinese counterparts I have been also looking at on Ebay.
I also like the X4-800L which has the linear Guide Rails so it is a bit more accurate I suppose, but it does not come with 1500W air cooled spindle which is why I am looking at the X4M version.
Any advice/opinions are welcome on these machines or others, as I dont have much experience with them, so let me know what you think.
cheers
Nickb00

Re: Welcome thread-tell us about you.
Hello, all!
I did 7 years in medical billing but got a chance to stop wasting my life and move into a whole new world of opportunity. The company I am with was founded by my cousin to build an invention of his about 5 years ago. That product has grown into now four separate but similar products the we manufacture almost entirely in house. This means I get to run a CNC gantry table, CNC plasma water table, two MakerBot Rep2's and a FormLabs Form2 along with a bevy of other responsibilities like making silicone molds for the rubber and resin parts we designed and use on the machines.
As the company was started in his garage, the boss has a ton of spare parts and little bits and pieces of CNC machines just sitting around gathering dust. I have been tasked with building a small unit to help us separate some of the work to keep the rubber and resin milling out of the big mill room where most of what is milled is 6061 AL.
Thanks!
Carl
