Cool How does water cut things but it is so soft. Mohs question.

    Hello,
So I've been thinking about how you can scratch glass with diamond, but you can't scratch it with water. Yet, water, over time, wears through rocks.

So, how does mohs work exactly in such instances? Can you cut harder materials with softer ones? I'm certain I'm missing something here.

    Thanks!

Becasue the water is carrying contaminates. It's not entirely the water doing the work. The minerals it carries, its abilitiy to be a solvent and the forces created as it flows over or around something wears away at the softer material. In the case of a waterjet the high pressure combined with the garnet media being transported in the stream does the cutting.

So how does the force (mass * acceleration) affect the cutting capability exactly? Yes, I'm asking about the math.

You don't want this particular dummy trying to explain the math.

If you really want to see the math behind waterjet cutting, see this paper:

That's cool, but I wasn't asking so much about waterjet cutting as about how force affects cutting with respect to the material used to do the cutting.

    As in:

Abrasive-A1 has a mass of B1, moving at C1 speed, with a hardness of E1, and dimensions D1.
It's cutting through a stationary object (A2) with a mass of B2, a hardness of E2, and dimensions D2 (assume it's square for simplicity).

To compute the length of time it will take to cut through object A2, you would ....?
Obviously, you'd get "inf" if it were impossible.
