Default X Axis Motor making loud noise and not responding properly

I am in quite a bind with a large project for a customer. My x axis motor is suddenly making a very loud noise and is sometimes going the wrong way when trying to move the head around the laser. I will press the left button on the control and it will go right or vise versa. I have filmed a video of this. Can anyone diagonse the problem and tell me where to start. is it the controller or the motor? Here is the video:

I took the belt off and this is what happens:

    Thanks in advance!

    More noise:

    • Check the micro stepping setting on the driver. If settings are changed to a lower value, the stepper would make more noise, run faster or stall!
    • Check the power supply output voltage. On a higher voltage the stepper will make more noise.

    Wrong Direction:
    • If the stepper only runs in one direction, check the direction input on the driver
    • If the stepper runs in the wrong directions:
      • The A+/A- B+B- wiring is changed. Switch the A+ /A- cables to solve
      • The configuration of the driver is changed. When using GRBL change setting $3

Thank you for the info. I did not make any changes to the software or hardware. Would this just randomly start happening? Would I be checking the voltage on the controller or the main power supply?

Even if you didn't change anything, it is always good the check if somehow settings are changed!

You should measure the voltage input on the input of the controller during idle and during run. During run it should "match" the output of the power supply.

Turn the stepper by hand, unconnected it should run smooth. When in doubt, compare it with an other motor.

If you can, swap the stepper to exclude it as the cause of your problems.

If you can, swap the driver to exclude it as the cause of your problems.

Found out my problem was a bad wire in the wire loom connected to the arm. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
