Default 100w Laser - how to get darker marks vs cutting

Just started using a chinese 100w laser. I Have tried varying speed (100mm/s - 500mm/s) and power settings (10-90%) in rdworks using scan mode to raster some block text on a bamboo cutting board but have mainly been getting variations on cut depth rather than dark surface markings. I have also tried running some tests with a second pass (2x passes at same speed/power, should I be doing separate settings for each pass?) I have played around with lowering the table (to put laser out of focus) between passes but am not getting the results I am looking for. (dark marking, shallow /no cutting)
