Default Replace Stepper Motor on FS LASER

I am trying to replace a stepper motor from a LASER cutter. It is the X Axis Motor.

Any chance you can help me figure it out?

The number on the motor is type 42BYGH108-31 CW No:2014.12.13

The above website lists it and gives more information.

Long Story: Replaced this motor last year with the company but charged us 110 for the motor. Failed again not a year later. I see these motors online that range from $5 to $40. So there must be a better way.

what fails on the motor ?

if a ridged coupling has been used and the motor and the shaft its driving is not aligned correctly
the motor bearings are not going to last very long

the other possibility is the current through the motor windings is too great due to a fault or the current setting is not correct

    Thanks for the reply!

Unsure If I can be more specific. It just stopped working. It was very hot! I tried testing it on the other axis control boards but still no movement.

There is no coupling. There is a belt pulley on the end of the shaft. So maybe there is too much tension on the belt?

I was thinking of running new wires to the a replacement motor if I could find one and releasing the tension but pretty sure I was at recommendation.

depending on which manufactures data sheet you look at
stepper motors run at 70 or 80 degrees C - too hot to touch for very long !!!!

at lease after a web search for the motors part number you have found the important electrical parameters to find a replacement

with the addition of the spindle diameter and frame size
you can find alternatives if need be

I figured as much with the date.

I have been using those specs to try and find the replacement. I think I am getting warmer.

    Any online companies you prefer?

    Spindle is 5mm Frame is 42mm x 42mm x 39mm deep

I have not bought many stepper motors (6 from the UK and 4 from Germany )
so I would not know who to recommend from US suppliers
other than large companies like of digikey Farnell/element 14 that have a good reputation
(or RS comomponents or Farnell in the UK) the downside is unlike ebay they cost more !! if the have what you want

    PS

    NEMA 17 motors are 1.7" x1.7" square

measured in mm its not obvious how the NEMA 17 relates to its size

IF you are burning up motors within a year I'd almost think that it may be underpowered. May be pulling to much weight. It cant hurt to up the size just a bit.

I'd go here They don't have the exact holding torque bit it's close. I've bought from them and they are good. Out of Tempe Az. Fast shipping got my new motor in 3 days.
