Default Sharing my custom made wire EDM machine design info

    Hi,

For those interested in creating their own low cost DIY or custom EDM machine, I wanted to share some info. I’ve been working on my own wire-edm machine for the past several years which is now steadily churning out quality parts. I’m open sourcing the complete mechanical design. All design CAD files can be found here:

    https://baxedm.com/knowledge-base/ex...w-edm-machine/

For the electronics, I use Dynomotions KFlop + Kanalog solution.

The arc generator, which is the most complicated part, I now offer as commercial product on:

    https://baxedm.com/

The generator can be purchased through the on-line webshop.

Here are some examples of the results:

    Regards,

    Mike

That is a great looking EDM, and the results are amazing as well. I thought about building one a couple of years ago, but chickened out. I might have to reconsider that after seeing yours. Good job!

    Hi Mike,

I'm also building EDM machine. I want to perform EDM micro-milling in the future.

    https://youtu.be/B3LPLUtKiTo

Here you can see my first tries
Made a tiny pocket in 3d printed (EBM) titanium-64 part.
I also attached picture with similar part after drilling experiment - I could not proceed anymore because bad flush condition - need to implement retraction mechanism.

I built EDM generator in accordance to Ben Flaming book and PCB (with some minor changes). I choose the Kflop+Kanalog hardware for ability to close loop with micro-steppers and renishaw linear optical encoders that I have.

I have many things to do like electrode compensation and automatization of the process.

Now I'm working on GAP control code.
Could you kindly share with me your C code for example?

In the far far future ( after my machine will be fine ), I want to build the wedm too.

    Best Regards,
    Gennady

    Hi Gennady,

Sorry for my late reply, I need to set a notification that triggers me when something is posted here...

Nice Job! Good initial results! The control code I've written is very specifically tailored for the BX17 arc generator in combination with wire-EDM, it is therefore unfortunately not usable for your machine. Have you implemented cyclic retraction yet? For die-sinking EDM that is important to get good flushing conditions.
    Keep up the good work!

    Hi,

with Tom's help I already got some working code.
For now I implement a retraction after SC condition.

But my code is changing everyday
Need to do more experiments, also want to implement the rotation of the electrode.

Thank you for very informative website.

    Hi All,

I'm doing a youtube series on how to build your own wire EDM machine. The first video is just out:

I'm going to cover all aspects in multiple videos, hope you will enjoy watching and get inspired to perhaps build your own machine.

    Hi,

The link above, which linked to the first episode of the video series on how to build your own wire EDM machine has been updated. Since I could not change my post, here's the new link to the youtube channel that has the entire series:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy4...craee8w5SfqXPA

this page also lists all episodes:

    Enjoy the show :-)
