    Default cnc plasma cutting problems

    Hello everyone,

I,ve been having a lot of problems with cnc plasma.

I didn't have any help from anyone and haven't ever work on machine like this, but I somehow make it work.

It's about chinese cnc plasma machine with starfire control, xpthc 4h automatic height contoller and hypertherm 85A source.

Troubles are, good cut only when new consumables set(only can cut one plate 2 square meters and then new), when auto height control is on, head is terrible shaking, arc doesn't start

    etc...

I really don't know how to solve this... I've tried to contact the seller but no response.

Here are few links for videos I've made to see what is happening.

    Sorry for some typing mistakes.

I will appreciate any kind of help or just a tip how to nearly get solid results.

Thanks everyone who has time and nerves to look at this videos.

    Best regards girls and guys...

    Several things spring to mind:
    1. THC is not tuned correctly. Do some experiments to see if you can dial it in
    2. The probe height is too low so when probing is started it does not have a reference point to start from
    3. It does not have a retry function built in if probing fails. Try slowing down probing.
    4. Its a crappy controller not fit for purpose!

    Thank you very much Rod.
What do you mean by "slow down probing"?
Could you tell me what would be the function name for that?
Maybe these are silly questions for someone who understands, but I really don't know what to do because I didn't have any education for working with cnc plasma.

Sorry I have no idea about your controller.By slowing down probing, I mean the speed at which the torch descends to find the material at the start of a cut

    Thanks again Rod.
and I thought you meant that but I really don't know where is that in the settings of starfire controller.
I'll try to find someone who has similar model and keep on trying...
...if I started this machine without help from anyone and no knowledge about plasma machines than I hope I'll set the right parameters somehow.

With hindisght plasma is not really an entry level machine to build. The inner workings of a THC are not trivial. Its taken me a few years to get mine working nice.
Its taken a lot of work in an open source group of us with LinuxCNC to get it to where it is today. To do it on your own will be hard work if you don't have support.

Yes, you're completely right and I don't think this is easy. Many people like you put enormous effort and time to make machines like this to work perfectly.
So machine like this that I work on is a toy versus others, I mean quality brands. But I only have this one to work on and will try get as good results as I can.
I'll try to get solid results because I know I can't get perfect with this kind of machine.
Thank you very much anyway for replying.
