loose connections can easily cause damage to stepper drivers

    when energised
the breaking of any motor connection will result in a back emf in the disconnected coil that is many times the supply voltage -
destroying the output transistors that control the current that flows through the motor coils

    OK, I understand!

So maybe it will be better to solder the wires from the drivers directly to the stepper wires instead of using a plug in that area in order to prevent damages like that?

I tried another time with a new driver and this time the same happened when I turned the tuning potmeter all the way to one end in order to get rid of the ticking noise, so I believe it was the same that happened last time. Does this potmeter regulate the current or voltage in a way that can damage the driver?

which version of the G540 do you have ?

if its the new type as in this video
they potentiometers have a plastic body as seen at 1:27

on older versions the potentiometers are uninsulated and on the G250 boards
you have to avoid shorting the potentiometer or near by components to the case

    old version of G540

I have the old version without plastic body. Do you know which components it is which has been damaged? It will then be much cheaper to change some components than a whole driver.

unfortunately I don't have any component level details of the Gecko stepper drivers

Its a question you will have to ask Marris at Geckodrive.com
