question about smooth stepper and gecko g540

does anyone know if a properly working ESS (network) card can cause the g540 to set it's fault light ? if so, what might the conditions be?
if not. can a fault in a g540 cause the mach 3 e stop and smooth stepper to fault ? and what might be the conditions?
intermittent problem trouble shooting.
