    Default Saturn 2 4x4 questions.

Just ordered a Saturn 2 4x4 and have some questions.
Anyone know the dimensions of the freight crate? I don’t think it will fit in my truck!
Are the rack spacers part of the package?
Does it come with the tramming plate?

    Thanks.

The crate is 76in x 63in and is 30in high.

It comes with the tramming plate.

It comes with our precision gear rack. The new rack is 3/4in wide and eliminated the need for the spacers.

    Hi everyone.
I'm working on the design for a bench for my S2 4x4. Something is not adding up. The details say the outer dimensions are 76"x62". Not much smaller than the crate.
I assume the blue frame has a length of 62" and the width of 76" includes the overhanging racks and drives.
So is the blue frame 62" square?
Or do the racks/drives extend past that?

Nate can better respond but yes, they extend past the frame. Ignore the piles on the spoilboard, I was cleaning out when I took this shot. We have the 2x4 but same thing on the 4x4.

    Your timing is perfect Nate.
I was just going to make a big table. But I came to the realization last night after some measuring that that I don't have that luxury. It was going to be down to the inch.
This is exactly what I needed.

    Thanks.

Platform is done. Hope I got the measurements right.
Paint next. Then comes the waiting.

Nice looking stand. You may find that you'll need some diagonal bracing. That gantry has some serious inertia when it gets to moving and stopping.

    Hi David. Thanks.
That was my plan but I can’t get it to flex at all.
Every board is glued and screwed.

I may place some on the bottom rails because I plan to put some shelving there.

My thinking is that I don’t plan on putting plywood on the top so I will have easy access to the corners if I find it needs bracing.

It was designed so that the Saturn base will land in between the two 2x6’s.
    At least I hope anyway.

    Later.

Haha! You'll be glad you did. Now, you may find later you need some on the Y side top to bottom brace but I would see how it handles the movement first. I added diagonals and it helped a lot.

Here's the only photo I have on hand -

    Truck arrived. Thanks Nate.!

And sure enough I can’t drop it in my truck. Also I don’t think it will fit through my bulkhead.

Anyone know just how big a deal it is to remove the gantry in one peice?
I may have to break it down to two pieces.

    Thanks.

10 bolts on each side. Six on top and 4 bottom. You will need to disconnect the cable chain.

    Hi everyone.
I’m struggling with choosing a spindle.
I don’t have 220v available and the 120v spindles seem to peek at 800w.
Not to mention a 60mm spindle will look redongkules on this machine.

I’m reading that a 3000w step up transformer for 220v is not a great idea.
    Router is not an option.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

What's the cost/issue with getting 220v run to your shop/garage?

Mostly that I’ve spent quite a lot already and have a ways to go before I can start producing.

Then again, I am in the cellar and the main house panel is about 15 feet away.
Dam it David you talked me into it again.!

Guess I’ll buy some conduit and make the run.

Any recommendations on a 220v spindle set with VHD?
I’m liking the rectangle spindles. Looks like it will bolt to the machine without a bracket.

Haha! You'll be glad you did and at least 15' isn't very far...

I went with the water cooled 3 kW spindle and a Hitachi VFD. You could use one of the square air cooled and not look back. I've read/heard that you have to be careful running an air cooled spindle for very long if the speed is below 12k rpm, that there's not enough air flow to keep the spindle cool unless it's cranked up. That's not the case with water cooled; mine stays cool regardless of the speed or load.

The Hitachi VFD is to me far better than the Chinese models for two reasons; 1) I can call Drives Warehouse in Dallas and get someone who knows the setup and inner workings of the Hitachi and will walk you through all the setup over the phone, and 2) the Hitachi produces far, far less electrical noise than the Chinese models so there's less chance of interference with the other components.

Sure, it cost a bit more but to me it's worth it.

Would an 80mm spindle be appropriate for a Saturn?
Also I’m seeing 2.2kw spindles with a 2.2kw VFD. shouldn’t that VFD be a higher rating? Like 3kw.
