Heian NC-331P with FANUC OM

I have recently picked up an old Heian NC-331P router.

It has a Fanuc OM controller.

I do not have a cable to connect this machine to a laptop. Despite my best efforts in cobbling one together, I cannot get it to talk to the laptop which is running some software I believe is correct. The connector is shown in the picture below.

It would be useful to source all the required elements to get this machine running, so I can be sure it all works as it should consistently, including:

- cable to connect
- software to run the machine
- a computer with the appropriate operating system - Windows 95 assumed
- a user manual for the machine

Hi, looks like you are trying to connect through the printer port on you laptop. This is a parallel port, you need to connect to a serial port.

Hi, thanks for the reply. This is the only port available, so I will look to pick up a different laptop with a serial port.

Do you know where I might find information about how to wire the cable pins to connect the PC and the Fanuc OM?

For example I found this image on a different thread in this forum, but I cannot seem to find anything that I think relates specifically to the Fanuc OM controller I have.

do not worry about ports on pc or stuff like that
these days is easy even the machine is from the last second world war

take a serial to usb converter cable

and a 9 to 25 pin adapter that can be easily opened because you need to make some wire changes

the usb side is for you and the 25 pins side is for your machine

open the adapter and make changes like this:



both types are working,you choose what you want to do.

what is with blue lines means must be soldered together.

install it on any pc running also windows 10

take almost any software to make transfer like DNC or SDNC etc

set up the pc and the machine it is easy ,follow the document

Ok so the cable was built. It is communicating with the OM Controller, but it appears the handshake is not happening correctly and the data going back to the computer is not allowing the program to continue running. At this point the machine dumps the program.

I believe the issue is that there is a 25pin to 9pin adaptor being used in the pathway, so I propose to take the 25pin connection off the cable and replace it with the 9pin.

I use a serial to USB converter and it works fine, Windows will treat the converter as a serial port and you need to set up the protocol in the same way as if there was a real port otherwise it will not work, they are not plug and play.

I use Fagor DNC which I believe is just a version of WinDNC. It is free from Fagor Automation and should work with any kind of control. I know for a fact it works with most if not all Heidenhain controls, I imagine it will work with Fanuc. The serial/USB converter is just a generic plug and play.
