Default Rebuild of my FANUC 6M system

I am in the midsts of rebuilding my ancient 6M control. I'm about half way through my 16M build.. so I thought I would take a quick break and look over what I have for the 6M. Why anyone would take the time to build/rebuild one beats me but it's fun.. I have fun with the builds.

I need to know if I have the right components, and some advice about which components to install.

    A14B 0061 B103 Input Unit
    A14B 0061 B001 Power Supply ("Stabilizer Unit")
    A20B 0051 C693 Terminal Unit
    A13B 0070 B001 Tape Reader
    A16B 1200 0150/01A PC-B ROM
    A16B 1000 0030/02A Master PCB
    A87L 0001 0015/11H Bubble RAM 64-1
    A20B 0008 0540 I/O (2 units ea.)
    A20B 1000 0131-01 Keyboard PCB Board
    A20B 0007 0030 MDI PCB / CRT Display
    A20B 0008 0451 RAM Board for PC-B
    A20B 0008 0430/03A CRTC/Puncher
    A20B 0051 C011, C012, C031, C032 CRT/MDI Unit
    A20B 0008 0470/06C Ad. AXES (Resolver)
    A16B 1200 0160/01A Ad. AXES (Resolver) ??
    A20B 0007 0440, -0441, -0444, -0445, -0449 Keyboard
    A20B 0006 0900 ??
    A20B 0008 0461 RES/IND board
    A20B 0008 0440/03A PC Model B board (Edit: added)

My few questions is which of the 4 different CRT MDI's are the right one?
It will be on another 3 or4 axes mill/machining center coming to the shop next week. I am gonna add the PC Model B board too.
There are also 5 different keyboards.
Does the tape reader need the interface board?
I actually do have some old tapes I would like to use once in a while.
Which is Ad Axes Resolver board is better?
Which resolvers are compatible? The A290 0501 T701?
It's been ages since I ran the 6.. any suggestions comments are helpful.
I've got several spare DC servos and the velocity units, including the spindle one. Anyone got tables on which goes which goes with which?
I also am missing some of the diagrams from my System 6 manuals.
Anyone has the B-53xxx series manuals or the B-54xxx series manuals I would like the PDF's.

Haven't got much done tonight, but I am also wondering if anyone has copies of the B-54044 and B-54045 manuals they could send me a photocopy of, or a PDF. Either the /01 or /02 edition. I'm missing mine.

I added the edition numbers of the boards above. There are a couple that I have more than one edition.

What is the current version of the ROM's?

    I might upgrade the BMU from the A87L 0001 0015 / 11H. This is a 64-1.

Anyone still make 6M cables or have spare connectors or cables?

    My A20B 0008 0480 A board is /03A and has the ROM's are 902 382 K, 902 362 K, 902 342 K, 902 322K. The others are C03 261A, C03 251A, B08 241A, C03 252A, C03 262A, B08 242A.

I just tossed an entire 6M control in the trash pile. Its sat outside for a couple months now. Anything you might need, i can get you cheap.

FWIW, I went with a Camsoft control refit.

My 6M control has sat around for a while too. I removed it from the mill it was attached to, a Monarch VMC. It was running fine when I removed it. I have no idea where the rest went to.

Well, I got the A16B-1200-0150/01A ROM board in today.

Where does connector CBX go to? it's on the board but I don't see it in my diagrams.

    There's a switch on there to Enable / Disable SPB1 (PC-ROM)?
    what is the setting?

I see of this has this masterboard connector "CAB", 4th from the right. This is apparently where the ROM board goes. While the board says "CBA". Typo?

I don't know what ROM's these are but there are a dozen of them and they all say M51. They are Hitachi HN482764G. The board has room for 38 of them. I actually have some blanks of this same HN482764 ROM chip somewhere.

The back of the board says A320-1200-T154/01.

Here is the list of ROM's on this board.

    Column 2, A and B. M51 081 and 082
    Column 3, C and D. M51 131 and 132
    Column 4, A through D. M51 021 and 022 and 121 and 122
    Column 5, A and B. M51 011 and 012
    Column 6, A and B. M51 001 and 002

Oh yeah I also found the remote position display. A 3 axes.. that looks like these ones
    Toyoda Fujitsu Fanuc Position Display A13B 0032 B370 - eBay (item 390117321948 end time Mar-06-11 11:29:41 PST)

    FANUC 6T 2 AXIS DISPLAY A20B-0007-0410 - eBay (item 360240152221 end time Mar-27-11 16:43:58 PDT)

just received today my A20B-0008-0480/02A A board, ROM. The PCB.# A350-0008-T484/01

It has the same CBX connector on the Masterboard side of the board, as the A16B-1200-0150/01A. The same ID CBA is on the Honda masterboard connector.

It has the same SPBI (PC-ROM) Enable/Disable jumper. The ROM's here are 902's and have the letter K.

I don't have any manuals at present, and am referring to the attached PDF as it best matches my configuration.

This must be the board that the A16B-1200-0150/01A replaces, and looks nearly identical to this A20B-0008-0480/02A board.

I also have a A20B-0007-0030 board for the CRT/MDI unit. Has connectors CLK, CLP, CLA and CLX. CLA and CLX are honda connectors, opposing genders. CLP is a black connector, 6pin. CLK is a click lock connector, light blue at the top of the board for a ribbon type cable, 20pin.

we did a boatload of 6b-2s over the years- was a great control.

I have one of the few remaining 'suitcase' PC programmers, a real *joy* to use - if you already have ladder chips in socket 241/242, can email you a basic program I wrote back in '93 to extract mnemonic ladder directly from the chip data to a LPT printer on a DOS computer - but you'll need a prom burner cabable of merging the hi/lo byte chip files together for my program to read it (or email me the seperate data if you have access to ANY prom burner that can read a 2716/2732 rom and store the raw binary)
I was trying to create a way to write PC-A/PC-B ladder without the suitcase(in case it dies) and the ONLY thing I couldnt figure out was how to create the checksum values in there...nothing I tried would work, gave up after a week of messing with it- but the mnemonic extraction works fine.

I even wrote a ladder to put a zero membrane style op panel on a 6- but the 16ms LED syncronization required using the 12 bit spindle transistor outputs as the reed relay outputs couldnt switch fast enough...

the 'CBA/CAB' thing is typical for PCB mounting on the 3/6 controls - look at the rest of the cards- they are the same way...same letters, but jumbled around a little

Still sorting out everything.. but I have made a lot of progress.

What is the CRTC/Puncher board? I don't have enough documentation on this one. Haven't figured out which of the two ROM boards to use.

crtc/puncher only has 2 plugs IIRC, a 50 pin for the rs232c/rs422 serial interface and the 20 pin for the video out. I dont have any pdfs for the 6, but have books including 'maintenance drawings' for pcb level. if I get time I'll see if I can put a few configuration pages together for you.

do you have the big gold 'unit adapter' for the 'connection unit' i/o board? it is fun wire wrapping those...last time I wire wrapped a connection unit, I was sitting in the waiting room at Rainbow in '98 while my 9 day old son was having open heart surgery...hes going to be a teenager soon, and that machine is still in production - was a good distraction, didnt even miss any pins
I built a test rig for a buddy that does Fanuc repairs, the unit I built for it had both boards- one programmed in the ladder to send/recieve i/o from the second (test) board- load resistors/leds and a couple rotary switches to manually test single relays meant it had way over 1000 feet of that tiny blue wire in it- my eyes are bad enough now, dont think I could do one of those again...he still uses it though

Remember I'm going from the print I posted here.

I'm sitting here wondering what the FANUC 3/5/7/9 controls are like. They seem to have similar boards. Wait.. they skipped "4" and "8".. LoL.

I think you're talking about the "Terminal Unit" that connects to the i/o board pairs. A02B-0051-C693.

I had some documentation from back when I had the unit running on my Monarch.. but when I took the control off the machine, I put it all away.. and also sold some of the parts to pay bills. It would be nice to have a few more pages to reference.

Although I have both the A16B-1200-0150 and the A20B-0008-0480 board, I'm gonna use the -0150 as I have just been told its for the -0030 masterboard that I have. The other board is for the -0410.

Added a pic of my CRTC/Puncher

Still working a little on this build..

Anyone have the pinout of the 50 pin RS422?

I need help with my A02B-0051-C693 Terminal Unit and the A02B-0051-C540 operator panel.

what exactly do you need? ive got "maintenance drawings" (board level prints) but the old originals are so hard to read, doubt theyd scan well...I have redrawn a few pages over the years, might have something readable that could help?

I am aiming at installing this A02B-0051-C540 "Option Unit" aka Operaor Panel. in the attached photo, as well as the Terminal Unit which attaches to the two A20B-0008-0540 interface boards.

    See the attached photos.

I'm working from the drawing that I attached earlier in this thread.

check your email- let me know if its readable enough to help

edit- heres the i/o card signals from the regular old connection book...I think Ive got a print for the cable from the op panel to the connection unit, but it might have been for a lathe- normally that cable came with the control.

I'll look for notes on the connectors- but think it was the first one sticking out in front was the same as C01 in the board plugs...but theres a C15/C16 already wirewrapped to run a single cable to the operators panel...if you can find the old cable from the machine, it would make things easy for you- just a few wire wraps for signal commons and youre ready to go.

Hi! thanks for the information! It came through just fine. Check your mail for a reply.

I didn't retain any of the cables. I just removed these parts kept them when the new owner of my Monarch VMC decided to install a PC based control.

I should have taken pictures on how it was installed. But the new mill it's going to be installed on probably will be a lot easier. There were a few problems with it before I took it offline and apart.

My schematic was not scanned very well and I couldn't find the actual section of the manual it came from.

I also remember that I did not have or could not find some of the components. They probably did not use all of the components or the machine did not have any upgrades done to it.

I might upgrade the Bubble memory. I have the A87L-0001-0015 board.

This week I received and installed the A20B-0008-0451 to the A20B-0008-0440 and then to the masterboard.

I don't have the Add Axis RES/IND board yet. Pretty much all the slots are filled on the masterboard. With the exception of this board.

This has been such a fun build so far. I don't have much new to report but thanks to 'tc429' I have some good information to go on and have been reading through it.

I settled on the A06B-6047-H002 and H003 VCU drives and got some 0M motors for them.

Gonna get working on more cables. Working on installing that Option Unit (Operator Panel). Thanks to the documentation it's a little less confusing.

I remember that when it was on the Monarch, it did not have much on it. Somewhere in my old notes was the all of the ROM numbers for the software. POh yeah, and yesterday I got the CRT/MDI working with the keyboard and the interface board. That 50 pin is gonna be fun though.

Then I gotta get working on parameters.. options.. etc.

Wheres' that PMC data sheet pdf? I lost it Stevo.

I was told earlier that this software was for the 6MB. A few weeks back I was given some 6M software ROM's along with a few of the 10T components I bought.

The power supply and input unit came Monday via FedEx. Got three A06B-6047-H002's back from the place that rebuilt them. The three servos are going to the shop to get rebuilt and certified.

I'm trying my best to get the wiring done with the help of a friend of mine who happens to be a industrial & commercial eleictrician.
