    Default Fagor 8020ms with Windnc

    Can anybody give me some guidance on setting up Windnc to my fagor 8020ms? This is my first industrial cnc mill so this is a whole new concept for me. Im looking for a step by step procedure to go from start to finish. Also, am I able to use the USB connector on my laptop to run this or do I need to have a desktop with a 9 pin connector?

    So ive figured out most of what i needed help with. I keep getting a Nr 255 error during the file transfer from WinDNC. Has anybody else had this error? I called and spoke with fagor and they were unable to tell me what it is. They will be contacting fagor in spain to see it anyone over there happens to know.

    I have figured it out for the most part. It was the post processor I was using. Now im getting ERROR 34 STRANGE CHARACTER errors and I have no idea where the problem lies. Ive gone over the code so many times and cant seem to find the problem. With that being said I want to make it clear that I know little to nothing about G code so the problem my be obvious and I just don't know what im looking for. Im trying to figure out how to load the post on here but the only way I can do it is to past it on here. Hope nobody minds the long code. If anyone can spot the error or errors (there may be a lot) please let me know.

    Hi Arron,
    Those Error 34 Strange Character codes can be caused by many different things. It's like a "catch all" code for errors that Fagor doesn't have any other error code for.
    Anyway, when I get one of those codes the things I check are:
    1. Does the name of the program match the line 1 number (without the %sign). The five numbers after the % in line one must match the name of the program.
    2. If you have any comment lines - anything inside of parenthesis () - don't use odd characters. Keep it to simple alphanumeric code.
    3. Make sure your line numbers are in numerical order. You can number by 1, 2's, 5's or 10's or whatever
    (for example:
    010 xxxxxx
    020 yyyyyy
    030 zzzzzz
    etc.
    - but, no matter how many numbers you skip, they just HAVE TO BE in numerical order.
    (BTW, I recommend you set your CAM software up to go by tens.)
    4. I don't think you can have any lines without anything in them (no blank lines) - check your last several lines of code.
    5. I don't think that you can have a decimal point in a federate (F) statement - so get rid of all your "F180." and change them to "F180"

    Try those things and see if you get better results.

    I have made all the adjustments you suggested and I am still having some troubles. When I try to transfer the file to the control via windnc I now either get the strange character or invalid file name error. These seem to be the two errors that im getting hung up on. No matter how many different codes I try I get these same two error messages. Is there any chance you happen to have a small sample code that you know works on the 8020 that I could reference to try and figure out my post processor?

    I had a little more time to scan your Gcode above. Here are some other things to check:
    1. Does your machine have a tool changer? If it does NOT - then the control will not understand line 2 (T codes are used to change tools).
    2. Lines 6 & 9 are also blank lines (maybe you already got those deleted out).
    3. There should not be a %0001 at the end of the file. The last line of code should just be: N2535 M30
    4. Make sure that the file you are sending is a .PIM file. If you are editing this file with an editor like Notepad (or other word processor) it will sometimes change the file type to something besides .PIM. It has to be a .PIM file for the control to read it. The best way to edit these files to use Notepad, then make sure to hit the "File Save" and save the file BEFORE you hit the exit or close buttons. This way, Notepad will save it as the same file type as it was when it opened the file.

    What kind of machine is this, Arron? It looks like the machine has a spindle, but this Gcode is pretty simple code. It's just a bunch of LITTLE short line segments with some small Z moves here and there (most of which are redundant).

    What CAM software are you using? It looks like it is not very good CAM software. It looks like circles are being approximated by lots of little, tiny line segments instead of writing a G02 or a G03 statement. If this was a plasma torch, then the lots of little tiny line segments would be OK. But, if you are using this as a router or mill, your work will come out looking like lots of little tiny line segments. It is also putting in A LOT of redundant Z moves. For example:

    N22 Z0.2 (This is also redundant - it should just go straight to Z0.2)

    N24 Z-0.25 (This is dangerous. You're crashing your spindle from Z0.2 down to Z-.25 at RAPID [G00] speed!!!!!)
    (of course this assumes that Z0 is the top of the part)

    Was your CAM software ever tailored for your machine? It has to be. There are a whole bunch of "Parameters" that are "set" to particular values in the F8020 control. The Gcode that is created by the CAM software has to be made to "match" your parameter settings. If it is not, then the Gcode will not "fit" your machine control and the CAM software will write things in the Gcode that the control will not understand. It looks to me like that might be happening here.

    Tell me more about this machine (answer questions above) and I might be able to help get you running.

    The machine is a 1989 NASA II Mill. It has two spindles but I have been focusing on just getting one up and running for now. I am using BobCAD for my cam. They told me the postprocessor they generated for the 8025 is good. I have strongly suggested they take a look at what they consider to be good since I have had nothing but issues using it. The cam nor the post processor has been set up specifically for my machine. They told me they would generate a post for my mill but I would have to provide them with the list of G and M codes and a functioning G code that currently works on my machine. The G and M code list is easily obtained but the functioning G code sample is where I am having trouble. I have two other routers and a 3D printer that I have been using for several years but those all use Mach3 or other proprietary software and I have never had to mess with any G code or post processors. This whole process is very new to me. I have tried my best to try and solve the issues on my own but I have finally had to admit defeat and seek help. Are you capable of generating a postprocessor for me. I would be happy to pay for your services if this is an option. I am attempting to get in touch with the first owner of the machine to see if they still have any other their old codes as well. I think this might help the process of getting this thing running.

    OK. That helps a bit.

    Well, the first problem is BobCAD. I use BobCAD for my CAD software - but that is it. Dealing with BobCAD-CAM beyond that is frustrating and useless - at BEST!

    I use SheetCAM for my CAM software. It is designed for sheet cutting with Plasma and routers - but it will work for the 2.5D CAM needed for a 3 axis mill (well most functions anyway).

    BobCAD is correct that an F8025M post processor should work for the F8020M control.

    Really, all the BobCAD folks need to have is a programming manual for the F8020M or F8025M. If you can provide them with a .pdf copy of the manual, then THAT is what they should be tailoring the post processor from - NOT some "working" Gcode from some friend of a friend that has a machine like this in his basement, yatta, yatta. Those manuals are available online. Just google "Fagor 8020 manuals" and do some digging and you'll find them. They used to be on Fagor's website - but I haven't looked lately.

    WIth all of that being said, that looks like an interesting machine. I found one picture of that machine on a google search. Nice looking machine. I've never dealt with a 2 spindle machine. But, I do know that there is at least one parameter setting that deals with that in the F8020/25 control. If you are trying to get just one spindle to operate - you need to go into the parameter list and find out the correct settings for which parameters to make that a single spindle machine. Chances are good that the F8020 control needs to see something in the Gcode that it is not seeing since you are trying to put Gcode into the control that is written for a single spindle and the control is looking for Gcode that "talks" to 2 spindles at the same time. BTW - be sure to back up ALL your parameter settings before you make any changes - that way you'll have them for reference when you want to change them back to double spindle operations.

    The most sure-fire way of having a fail-proof and fool-proof backup of your parameters is to page thru all of them, one page at a time and take a digital picture of the screen. Then, put them all in a folder on a computer somewhere. Then put them all in another computer somewhere else. And, just to be sure, put them on a laptop somewhere else. That way, you'll always have access to the parameters that need to be set for that machine in case the battery backup goes dead (it happens all the time - just search this forum to see how many folks get caught with a dead battery and no parameter backups). Please do yourself a favor and back up the parameters right now.

    In order to get "apples" to "apples" here, you'll need to send "single spindle code" to the machine that has parameters set for "single spindle"; or, you'll need to get the CAM software set up to write "double spindle" Gcode to send to an F8020 control that has parameters set up for (wants to see) "double spindle" Gcode. I hope that analogy makes sense.

    I would do as you are thinking. Set up the parameters in the control for single spindle operation. Then start out with CAM software that is tailored for this machine in single spindle operation. Once you get that going, you'll have had time to learn what you need to do in order to get CAM software to write "double spindle" Gcode. BTW - I don't even know what "double spindle" Gcode looks like - but I know that somehow it has to be different from the code for normal, everyday, single spindle Gcode. I do remember that it is discussed in the Fagor manuals, you'll have to get into the manuals and figure that out - later.

    Moving on to the task at hand. The Gcode I sent in the last post, is valid Gcode for the F8025M. So, that should help with the BobCAD guys, if you want to get them to write the post processor.

    So, here's what I see you needing to accomplish:
    1. Back up your machine parameters.
    2. Set the parameters in the machine for single spindle operations. To do this, get ahold of the F8020M (or F8025M) OEM manual. That's the manual that will have the list of parameters and how to set them for the machine that your OEM (NASA installed the control on).
    3. Write some really basic Gcode (from scratch, i.e. write it by hand not from a CAM program) to use as I test program to get the machine moving. Just do X, Y & Z moves at first. Once you get that working, then add a spindle Gcode to get the spindle turning. Then, if that goes well, combine all 3 together.
    4. While you are working on step 2. above, get BobCAD busy on writing (or fixing) the post processor for your CAM portion of BobCAD-CAM software.
    5. Use the machine for a while in single spindle configuration. Make some parts, try different things to get familiar with creating code for the machine to do various types of machining (e.g. profiles cuts, hole drills, pockets, bosses, etc.).
    6. While you are doing step 5 above, begin researching double spindle operations. Learn how the Gcode is different. Then get BobCAD-CAM working on tweaking the post processor to handle the multi spindle code.
    7. Go back and change the F8020 parameters for multi spindle operations.
    8. Repeat the applicable steps above for double spindle operations.

    Writing Gcode from scratch is not that difficult for basic shapes like squares, triangles, and even circles. You seem like a pretty smart fella and should be able to do it once you've learned the basic G, M, S and T commands. Consider taking a few days to learn the basics and then dig into the F8020/F8025 programming manuals. You'll pick it up pretty fast. Unless you're programming French curves or some kind of crazy splines it's pretty straightforward if you understand an X,Y & Z coordinate system.

    BTW, here is a very simple program to try to load onto the control, just to see if it will load and to try to move the machine.

    This program just moves the spindle up to Z1 at rapid (G0) speed. Then runs the spindle down at F10 (10ipm) to Z0.5. Then the table moves (at F10) in a 2 inch square box profile from X0Y0 to X2Y0 to X2Y2 to X0Y2 and back to X0Y0. Then it rapids the spindle back up to Z1.

    I'm not sure of your skill level here Arron, so please don't be offended if I am over simplifying things for you.
    So, here's how to load this program into the control after you've set it up for single spindle ops.
    1. Copy and paste the program above into a .PIM file. (Make a copy of an existing .PIM file, then cut and paste the above into it).
    2. Make sure to remove any blank characters in every line (no blank spaces at end of each line).
    3. Select "File Save" and then close the file.
    4. Turn on the machine.
    5. Do a machine home operation.
    6. Do a touch-off so that Z0 is about 1" above the mill table.
    7. Fire up the computer and WinDNC and send the file to the control.
    8. If the file is successfully sent then go to "OP MODE -> 0"
    9. Pull up the file (push P00011 -> recall)
    10. When the program loads, select CYCLE START. Keep your hand close to the E-stop button in case something bad wants to happen.

    Let me know how that goes.
    If that code runs, we'll add some spindle Gcode.

    I am starting to realize that BobCad was not the best choice in the world but fortunately I did not pay that much for version 26. I don't know if they were desperate to sell a seat or just didn't care but I only forked out $300 for a new license and a year of support. I also have a license for Inventor Pro that I use for my CAD software. I love it! It doesn't get any easier than Inventor in my opinion. With that being said, is it not such a thing that once I have the post processor figured out it will just be a post and go type of thing? Meaning, no matter what the part is that I designed in inventor, weather it be a simple bushing or a complicated 3D part, with the correct post processor all I have to do is design that part and click generate post or am I going to have to modify the post for every type of part?
