    Default another hairbrained idea

i have a HBM BF25 milling machine with its original motor and two speed gearbox with plastic gears
one of the things i like to do about its weak points is mount a bigger motor and a belt drive on it
3 phase motors are kindah heavy and have a large frame so i was looking intoo alternatives
the treadmill motor is one , but there kindah expensive when you add the cost of importing it from china or wherever ebay finds them used (usually the states ) there allso briushed motors

i have seen huge steppermotors been used as drivemotors and there small but there allso pretty expensive and i cant understand how to get them to work electricly (powersupply size , how to hook up the driver so it works as a stand alone unit , stuff like that ) the bigger ones run on weird dc voltages and usually dont come with the powersupply

another option i have been thinking about is using a chinese watercooled 2.2 Kw spindle motor
to fit it i need to make a new front plate with a flange so i can mount it on top of the machine , thats eazy enough
the thing that makes it harder is : i want to put a pulley and a keyway over the axle in place of the chuck , and the axles in the machine have tread tapped ontoo them and are hollow pretty far up intoo the axle
yes i could stick an axle in the chuck and mount the pulley to that but then the whole thing gets a bit high on top of the machine , it allso puts more un nessesairy force on the lower bearings
does anyone know if the axle from a chineese spindle motor can be pushed out of its rotor and replaced or is there a solid axle version available (allready mailed a few chinese supplyers but no luck so far )

i allso be interested to get my hands on a (cheap / free) used chinese spindle , doesnt need to be a working one , its mostly to see if i can fill the axle with weld and then remachine it back to round / straight and put a keyway in it without damaging it beyond repair

The Chinese spindle would not be a good idea, there lowest speed they can run is 6,000 RPM and at that speed there is almost no torque, so not much good for a mill conversion, there are many others that do this already, and there are some kits also, they are here on the Zone

Lots of people get disgusted with the plastic gears in those mills, and replace them with a couple of opposing pulley clusters powered by a regular induction motor. You don't really need variable speed; a good high and low speed should be sufficient for most things. You should be able to find an adequate fixed-speed 220v motor without too much trouble. Those Chinese spindles, as has been pointed out, are much too fast. Here's a kit someone sells if you don't want to make the parts yourself: G0704 Belt Drive Kit - BenchtopPrecision.com

Forget the treadmill. I've got a decent treadmill motor and controller on my bench which is going into a home build 2" x 72" belt grinder and they're even more gutless than the chinese 3hp spindles. Cheap if you happen to pick one up from the junk pile, but no way would I pay money for one for even light duties, let alone a mill spindle.
