Remote IO using KONNECT

I start this discussion because there isn't any simple way to have a remote console for the Kflop without using many wires..

So a Konnect board would be a good solution, but the communication over 2 meter it will not work in this conditions.. i wonder if we use two logic level converter (one for each side) https://www.adafruit.com/product/395...FZRj7AodnAUAUw with a higher voltare level (12-24v ), the cross talk and interference will not be a problem any more.

Hi swat cat,

8 of the IO to Konnect work as a bidirectional data bus and have pull down termination resistors, so I don't think such an IC will work for that. I'm not aware of a good solution.

You might try using shielded ribbon cable. Konnect can work with a fairly long cable if not exposed to noise.

Some ribbon cables have double conductors with GNDs between signals to reduce cross talk.

Wouldn't it be possible to use the UART on the kflop and create a small circuit for the other end of a serial cable, possibly with RS-422 or RS-485 for better noise suppression?

I think that would be possible, except I think you need more than "a small circuit". Something with enough intelligence to receive/send commands and data.

Control panel wiring is something I've been thinking about recently.

My last retrofit, I used a Konnect wired to two DB25 breakout boards in the main control cabinet, wired everything on the control panel to another two DB25 BOBs, then used 25pin parallel cables to connect them.

For my next retrofit, I'm thinking about rationalising the number of switches by moving things like axis and step size selection to on screen buttons, so I can condense everything down to a single 25pin cable.


The other option is something using Modbus, however that's not something I would recommend unless you're reasonably competent at programming, and understand how Modbus works. It's also something I had pretty much dismissed for anything other than communicating with a PLC, however I've become aware of various Chinese Modbus IO modules on eBay recently, which could be a valid option. (just as an example, this type of module - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Digital-I...N/392268000136 but there are also various relay output boards)
