Default can this drive/amp work? copley controls hall sensor input question

if i have the servo encoder running to the Kanalog board for position, do i have to run the analog hall sensor to the drive amp still or will the amp just run off the single REF+ input from the Kanalog?

i am trying to free up some analog outputs and my amps now use 2 per servo.....

    From the manual:

    These amplifiers use Hall
    sensors with analog, sinusoidal outputs
    to produce sinusoidal commutation in
the motor, and accept a single +/-10V
reference input to control motor current,
which produces linear force in the
    motor.

Yes I believe this amplifier needs the hall sensors connected to do the motor commutation. Only one DAC signal from Kanalog is required as the drive does the commutation.

i am trying to free up some analog outputs and my amps now use 2 per servo.....

This drive would not need the hall sensors as the commutation is performed by KFLOP based on the encoder position (and reference mark) but requires 2 DAC signals from Kanalog.

    i see
the second one i am using now
i wish Kanalog had like 20 channels out.....

can the kflop output a fake hall sensor output for the drive? via Opto Isolated Outputs or GPIO - LVTTL?

    Hi turbothis,

It probably could via a User Program, but then the commutation would be trapaziodal instead of sinusoidal. Also I believe the drives are expecting +/- analog signals not TTL.

    cool, thanks for the replies!
i will see what i can learn from google
any chance you have a link to something that talks about the trapaziodal vs sinusoidal commutation?

I have used the first one for standard BLDC motors with hall effect, either on the motor itself or motors that have hall tracks on the encoder. ±10vdc control.
The second drive is for linear motors with analog Halls, sinusoidal motors.

is there a cheap/universal encoder with hall tracks i can put on my AC servos?
i am using the second ones now with just encoders going to the Kanalog

Good encoders are typically not cheap, to order, you need to know the pole count of the motor, and then they have to be aligned using a D.B. ;scope.

Trapezoidal is simply at some point switching to a new pair of 2 of 3 motor coils as the rotor advances, rather than sinusoidally transitioning amplitudes for all 3 coils. Here is one link.

Don't you already have encoders somewhere?
