    Default er20 collet sellers

I just got my new Chinese 2.2kw spindle with an er20 collet. Where should I buy collets with the best price/quality compromise? What sizes make the most sense to buy?
I was thinking 1/2 1/4 and 1/8 but does it make sense to get others?
    Thanks

After making a mistake buying those sets with a dozen collets and they are ok but a long ways from good. I purchased off Amazon 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 inch and they were about $15 each. They are perfect and YES you can tell the difference.

I went with Techniks brand. I also replaced the collet nut with a techniks brand. I have been very happy with them. You can find them on Ebay. Sizes depend upon what you plan to do. 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 are the most common.

I found my order on Amazon for the 1/8 inch but not the other two. Must have been on eBay?

This is one of those how much money do you have discussions more than any thing. I's strongly suggest a full set of collets if you intend to do any metals processing, engraving or fine work. The reality is there are a wide array of cutters out there and often they have the same size shanks as the cutting width. On the other hand, traditional wood working is 1/4" OR 1/2". So either approach can "make sense" depending upon what you wish to do with the machine.

As for best quality for the buck that is a lot harder to pin down. YOu can go to some place like Maritool and pay between $16 and $22 dollars for a collet or buy a whole set. Also the big catalog vendors often have sales and wider choices for manufactures. In the end only you know what makes sense for your intended usage, I look at it this way, if you have a set that covers the entire range of possibilities you are effectively done buying collets and can cover anything the spindle can do. But that is approximately $60 verses $200.

Part of my position here is based upon issues we have at work where we have R8 mill collets and 5C lathe collets and in both cases the sets are incomplete. It can be very frustrating when you have a cutter for a job but no way to hold it. Flip it around with the lathe and you have stock you can't grip. You can always take the approach of buying when needed which can work out for some people.

I always use Techniks collets. Even on our 15HP router at work.
