Default Looking for Spindle selection input

Hi all. I am planning to build a CNC to fit my needs and I am trying to decide on a spindle from eBay/China. Looking for input from anyone that has done this and am concerned about setup and reliability. I need a 3-5HP spindle/VFD. I will be using it mainly for sheet goods and possibly aluminum (infrequent use on aluminum) but I build/sell kitchen/bath cabinetry. All input is appreciated.

    Hi Mattcnc
I am in western NY state. I posted this message because I DL'd setup instructions for a potential spindle and thought the instructions left a lot to be desired, probably because I had never set one up before. I thought I would ask to see if anyone could point me to a vendor that had a good spindle with good instructions also. There must be more people that has some valuable input for this. All input is welcome.

I don't think any chinese spindles/VFD's come with actual instructions. The best you can hope for is a good VFD manual. But those just contain a list of the settings. Typically the seller will tell you how to set "some" of the settings.
Genuine Huanyang VFD's seem to have the best manual's by far.

If you need someone to walk you through the setup, you can buy from Automation Technologies, who provide support for their products.

A step up from them would be UGRA cnc, who sell their spindles and VFD's pre configured, tested, and ready to run. They are more expensive, though.

If you are buying Chinese to save money, make sure you get a genuine Huanyang VFD.

Most chinese spindles are similar, if not the same.

You'd probably want something like this?

I don't have any experience with that spindle, though, but all similar size spindles on Ebay appear to be the same. This is probably one of the better sellers.

Your questions have pretty much been covered but to highlight most 3 phase spindles can work with a variety of VFD drives. As pointed out above you can get very good drives from Automation Direct with good manuals. At least the drives we use at work have proven themselves to be very reliable. The thing to watch out for though, if this is a single phase machine, is a properly sized drive for a 5 HP spindle. That might lead you to talking with an applications Engineer to get a properly sized drive.

Wizard thanks for the input. I have looked at Automations website and I am happy with their products and prices. I have a spindle and VFD picked out but I haven't talked to them yet. I have 3 phase power from a 25 HP RPC but I will need to insure the VFD will function well with it. The wild leg from the RPC can be a potential problem. Hopefully Automation Direct will know.

Automation Direct and Automation Technologies are NOT the same company (nor is Automation Overstock AFAIK..)
Automation Direct has decent prices on some branded electrical/pneumatic/etc parts as well as their own brand of some things. Their stuff isn't exactly high end, but it's solid stuff.
Automation Technologies (AKA Keling) is a reseller of generic Chinese import stuff. They provide some support, but not sure how much different their offerings are from Ali/Ebay.

Skrubol good catch, thank you. I bookmarked the Automation website and it was Automation Technology. Sorry I got in too much of a hurry when I typed 'Direct' instead of 'Technologies'.

Depending on what your needs are you probably won't need 3 phase for your vfd. Most of the spindles in the range your looking can have the drive powered by regular 220.

I didn't notice the mention of the RPC. Up to 3kW single phase input VFD's are pretty common. Beyond that, I'd think it would still be easier to get an oversized 3-phase VFD that can be derated for single phase use.
