    Default CNC Depot S30 ATC

I wanted to ask if anyone is using one of these. I have searched and information is very scarce. If anyone is using one on any brand machine (preferably cnc routerparts) please tell me how its working for you. Any suggestions on implementing one on a CNCRP pro would be really appreciated as well.

I do have one general information question as well. Would an ATC be ok to use on an open loop machine? I dont see it available much and hope its not a waste on one.

CNC Depot used to be known as Blurry Customs, who didn't have the best reputation. They produced several different ATC spindles over the years, but they've never been too popular here, most likely due to the cost.

I've heard that their new S30 spindle is a much better spindle than their previous offerings.

There are very few if any members here using ATC spindles, as far as I know, as the cost is usually prohibitive for hobbyists, which most of us are.

An open loop machine will work fine with an ATC spindle.

I am interested in this as well. I spoke to someone in their online chat about this who referred me to a guy who appears to have installed their S30 ATC spindle on a desktop model: https://www.instagram.com/scissortailcustom/
If you find any more information about installing this on one of the larger CNCRP PRO machines, please share.

I'm still debating on it myself. Its either this spindle or going with 2 spindles from CNCRP. I talked to Alex at cnc depot and he said they have set them up before and have all the software to make it work. I'm just skeptical since they aren't used much from what i have read and I don't really know enough yet to fix any problems.

As Ger21 pointed out the expense is a big hinderAnce. I know nothing about the S30 nor the vendor but realize that there are additional expense that will likely drive up the installation cost. Consider:

1, A compressed air system if the ATC requires it.
    2. A "shed" to keep the tapers clean while in storage.
    3. A dial or chain to store the tools on. Along with a transfer arm. Alternatively you use part of the cutting area for tool storage. Machining space maybe required forcing you to extend the CNC machine for storage within the cutting area. Another option is to lengthen the Y axis so the tools are outside working area of the table. The point here is that an ATC spindle by itself isn't automatic.
    4. The electronics are another matter and in that regard you need someone with a good understanding of the Machines controls.
    5. Ive probably have seen more ATCs implemented on the LinuxCNC than anywhere else.

You don't need a "shed" or dial or chain.

Linear rack ATC's are very common on routers, with the tools lined up on either the back or either end.

Yes, you want to keep the toolholders clean, but the airblast from the spindle will usually do a good enough job of cleaning them before they get picked up.

Thank you for the information guys, I think I will hold off on the atc right now. I was reading on the camheads forum and they say that an atc is not something most people want to add unless its done at the factory. Which leads me to the other choice of adding a second spindle. From what I have read and if I understand it correctly it can be used as though its an atc, but with 2 tools. You just select the tool number in the cam software and the current z axis will park itself when the time comes and the other spindle will come in and run its part of the file. I can get by with 2 tools from what I want to do, and once I outgrow it I will upgrade to a heavier machine with an atc. I am thinking to start with a 5mm drill in one head for the holes, then follow with a 3/8 compression in the other for dados, rabbits, and part cut out. I can add either a 2nd router for $1500-1800 or another 3hp spindle for $3250. I like the spindle because I can use it for anything the 1st spindle can do which opens up more possibilities, but the cost difference makes me think I should get the router now and see how much I really need 2 spindles. I can always swap the router for a spindle later. I can also build a vacuum table with that cost difference of $1450-$1750.

It can, if the machine (and software) is setup correctly. Make sure CNCRP confirms this.

Since you've been at the Camaster forum, you might want to talk to Gary Campbell. He's got a bit of experience with those S30 ATC spindles, and does retrofits. Although I don't think he would do one on a Mach3 system.

Im running the S30 on my CNC router parts pro4896. Im still not using it as a full atc I do manual quick changes by hand. push the button drop the tool holder out put the new one in hit start It has run for about 8 months now with no trouble. I use it for cabinet parts and doors any thing in wood. it has done everything I asked of it. How long it will last will take a few years to find out. On my crp frame I dont have the travel needed to put the tool holders across the end. Im hoping to take the time and do that in the new year. I was worried about the Spindle and Alex when I bought because of the Blury Custom name. Its big dollars to invest and will it work. I have had no trouble with either and this spindle addresses the weaknesses of the past Models. you have to remember that HSD started out with there first model spindle to. Im sure they had failures along the way. Alex has stayed in contact and addressed any concerns I have had along the way
