My router went today on my old DIY table need advise

Assuming Gary lives in the U.S. all '120v homes' have 240v power coming into the home. Most circuits for light and recepticles split the 240v into 120v, but some circuits are actual 240v like an electric stove or clothes dryer. An electrician should be easily able to pull a dedicated 240v circuit from the breaker panel.

Yes, that's what I know as well, but it is better if an electrician looks at his installation AND installs a proper wall socket.

Timely thread.... my router appears to be on life support so time to step up to a spindle. Thanks for all the info but one question.... is there any difference to the "guts" between a square and round spindle? For my setup I'm thinking a square spindle would work be easier to mount but going against a "Ger21 approved solution" isn't something I like to do.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I really don't think there is any general difference between square and round spindle regarding what's inside or which quality it is. Quality is not based on the shape but brand and price. I believe that the square ones are a bit more complicated to make, which explains why they are a bit more expensive, even the cheap Chinese ones. The round ones are more popular because they are made by many and there are many options, as well as easier to replace. I also believe that there are more air cooled square ones with active cooling than round ones, so it depends on where you want to go. Personally I like the square design because it is easier to install and takes less space, but I ended up with a round one and I don't see any reason to regret that so far. The only time I regretted was when I cracked my spindle holder. That wouldn't have happened if I had a square spindle.

BTW, why do you think Gerry "disapproves" the square ones and why do you think you need his "approval"?

Well for one, there's more aurface area on a square spindle for cooling. Second, since the body on the square spindle is aluminum extrusion, the aluminum can be more efficient at drawing away heat. Thirf, you dont need a mounting bracket, so it is more rigid, and can be shorter cantilever from the gantry.

Didn't say he "disapproved" of the square ones but I know he has been testing the spindles he recommended in this thread for a while now so it is a "safe bet" they would work for me...... Just easier to go with a know quantity than having to research which square spindle is "good quality" is all. Most of you guys here have forgotten more about CNC than I will ever know so I rely on what you guys have to say. to keep me out of too much trouble. Gerry just happened to be the one to throw out a specific model that he recommends.

No, you didn't say he "disapproved", but you said "approved solution" and the way I see it, any other solution would be "disapproved"... Anyway, just as I thought, his reasons are just like mine... round ones are cheaper, square ones are more practical but also more expensive, but just as "approved" as round ones.

I think quality-wise you should not worry. Square ones are the same lottery as round ones...

I'm sure all spindles assure not created equal, so what brand or features should I look for? This is the kit I'm currently considering purchasing.

My spindles came from RATT Motor, and my VFD from Solar.Jean. While the spindles run fine, the build quality is so-so, which is expected as they were the cheapest ones I could find at the time.

If you look at all the pictures in that Ebay ad, you'll see that they show two different spindles. So you really don't know what you are getting until it arrives.
That's the price of buying cheap.
Imo, a "genuine" Huanyang VFD is what's most important, and that's what the ad says you are getting.

I wouldn't expect the included collets to be very good. I use Techniks collets, and there's a very noticeable difference between them and the collets that came with my spindle. Mine only came with a single 6mm collet, which is pretty much useless in the US.

Thanks... I want to stay with an ER20 since I already have some of the higher quality ones so I don't want to start over. I was looking some today while my son was in his meeting and those cheap ol' round ones are starting to look pretty good

Ok... my lack of understanding could be at an all time high. Doesn't a PC 7518 router use a ER20 collet? It has been a long while but I thought the precision collets I bought were ER20. I'll have to go dig back through my records and see what I did buy

No. You are probably thinking of the Precise Bits collets, but no, those are not ER20 collets.

I received a message from POWACE08 and they said the router brand is Hua Jiang and the spindle & the VFD both have 2 year warranty. Does anyone have any experience with this brand spindle?
