I was doing some research and found this on another forum, does it sound right?

To calculate RPM use this formula, in which you will have to find RPM's when you have Hz.
    1 RPM = 0.01666666667 Hz
    Formula: 0.01666666667 × RPM = Hz
On our VFD if you select the >> button about 3-4 times, it will change from Hz, A, or ROTT.
When the LED's are lit on Power, FOR, and ROTT, you should be able to see the RPM the spindle is running at, our maximum setting for these spindles is 400Hz / 24000 RPM.

I also found a post saying there is an order that you need to set the programs in the vfd? I cannot get desk cnc to allow me to change rpm's but it will allow me to change rpm through the perimeter on the vfd. I assumed it was DeskCNC being antiquated but maybe it's a setting I've got wrong, any advise?
    Thanks

Gary, for a 2-pole motor (which these spindles normally are), your equation is technically right, but it’s much easier to times and divide by 60 (the inverse of .016667).

    Hz x 60 = RPM; RPM / 60 = Hz

Note this only works for 2 pole motors. Some spindles are 4-pole and for those you would use 30 instead of 60 in the equation.

As far as the VFD settings, I can’t offer much help there.

just confirm your on screen rpm is roughly the same as vfd frequency- then use on screen display.
i prefer to monitor current on the vfd- it gives a great insight when your tools are going blunt or your working it too hard.

Brokenhorn - thank you, I'll make sure we have the vfd set to 2 pole and use the formula.

Battwell - I'm learning a lot but here is where I'm going to let my newbe show. How do I monitor current on/of the VFD?

I cannot get DeskCNC to adjust the rpm. It will show a simulated rpm based on the spindle setting ( it is just a slider ) the cadcamcadcam.com instructions for the 0-10 card I purchased, say to move the slider all the way to the right on deskCNC which shows 24000 but since I cannot get the spindle to run from DeskCNC the slider doesn't really do anything.

This part will be from memory so the program #'s may not be correct but When setting up the vfd we had changed the program 1 & 2 from 1 to 0 to allow control from the software but it kept changing back to 1 which meant manual ( through the vfd ) we assumed it was DeskCNC being old so we left it alone.

I do think we left the poles set the default of 4 because the spindle late didn't show anything. Thank God we only ran it to check to make sure it worked & the direction is correct so hopefully we didn't cause any damage.

This is the post I found on this forum that mentions the order to setup the programs. This is also from 2010 so I'm not sure if the vfd program has changed or not.

    2. You can see download the inverter manual from web link:

    3. I just tell you how to set up VFD as following
Firstly, adjust the PD013 to 8 (set the setting to factory setting)
Secondly, adjust the PD005 to 400
Thirdly, adjust the PD004 to 400
Finally, adjust the PD003 to 400
Finally, adjust the PD144 to 3000
Note: you should set PD013, PD005, PD004,PD003, PD144 in order. It mean you should firstly set PD013, then PD005, then PD004, then set PD003, finally set PD144.
Note: after you set the all above parameter, then please recheck the PD005, PD004, PD003 value is 400 or not to confirmed that you already set it. (note: please do not check the PD013, or all the setting will go to factory setting)
The reason we let you recheck is that if you do not set it at 400, then when you run the spindle motor, the spindle motor will be over-current, then the spindle will very hot and then within 5 minutes, it will broken.

    Thank you

The order you set parameters shouldn't make any difference.

I cannot get DeskCNC to adjust the rpm. What do you have for parameters P001 and P002. You probably have the VFD set to manual mode.

It is set to manual (I think 1) but when I change it to the other # (0 ?) The VFD changes back to 1.

I'll check later today & let you know.

These are the only program changes we made

Program 1 is set to 1
Program 2 is set to 1
Program 3 is set to 400
Program 4 is set to 400
Program 5 is set to 400
Program 8 is set to 220
Program 14 is set to 2
Program 15 is set to 2
Program 23 is set to 1
Program 44 is set to 2
Program 45 is set to 3
Program 141 is set to 220
Program 142 is set to 6
Program 143 is set to 2
Program 144 will only go up to 9999 not 24,000

I tried the >> Button trick to show the RPM'S and it Max's out at 11520

If you see anything I have set wrong please let me know.

    Thanks

PD144 should be set to 3000.

There's a jumper in the VFD that needs to be set to terminals 1-2 for external control. Make sure that it is.

    Do you have PD072 = 400?

I wrote up a long post early this morning but I don't see it now.
I checked pd 0072 and it was on 400.
    I changed pd 0144 to 3000
I changed the jumper to 1-2

It is working "occasionally" now through DeskCNC but I cannot figure out what I'm doing that makes the spindle to turn on. Impress run on the vfd the toggle the CCW ON / OFF a couple times & it will start up. I'm sure it is probably operator error but it would be nice to figure out the key to getting it to start consistently.

The good news is I can adjust the RPMs but moving the spindle slider on DeskCNC, but the RPM's values on DeskCNC & the VFD don't match exactly.

    Thanks

You need to make sure that DeskCNC is outputting the proper voltage, and doing what it should be to start and stop the spindle.
I've never used it, so can't really offer any help.
Unfortunately, there probably are very few people using it. I thought they stopped selling it 10 years ago.
