    Default Cutting ACME screws

What did you guys use to cut your ACME lead screw to length? was going to use a bandsaw with something over the threads to protect them. is that pretty much it? just wanted to check if this is a good idea or not, thanks

Anything that will cut steel is fine.

You will need to clean up the threads no matter which method you use to cut the shaft. One reason though to put something over the threads is to minimize blade wander as the blade enters the threads. If you aren't careful with the start the acme threads can channel the bandsaws blade.

You could just use an abrasive cut off blade. Like I said you will have to clean up the end of the shaft anyways.

I've used a chop saw with the fiber reinforced carbide blade, a metal bandsaw, and an air cutoff saw with metal cutting disc. All work fine but less cleanup with the metal bandsaw. Probably not an issue if you have to turn down the end of your screws anyway like I did.

    As post #4 said..
Or epoxy a sleeve over it and turn free end to size.

I've used a hack saw, dremel, and a cutoff saw before for different builds. I prefer to use a belt sander to round over the ends after it's cut though. Having a metel file handy to knock off any burrs before you sand the ends comes in handy.

This is what I use. Works great and a very handy tool for other tasks in my shop.
