    Default BREAK OUT BOARD HELP

I’m trying to wire the steppers, motors and BOB for a cnc router still the school I’m teaching
The motors ARE wired to the steppers now I need to complete the wiring to the bob.
Since it was sold to me as a 6 Axis board, I can’t figure out where the wiring goes.
Of course some is printed in Chinese.
I’ve managed to locate the wiring for the motors to the KL’s but I’m confused about the rest.
    I’ve watched countless TouTube videos....
    But I’m not sure.
5V, 24V.... checks out on the BOB.
So how do I power the KL’s?
Is it 110V or is it 24V or is it 5V? And how do I do that?

Just looking at your photo of the BOB I can not read all the labels but

    I can make out you have the 12 outputs ( pins 1 to 9 + pin 14 + pins 16 & 17 )

the question is how many axis do you need ?

you can use all 12 outputs to drive 6 axis but you will then not be able to control the 3 relays !

if you only control 4 axis you will have outputs to control other things

you will have 3 pins available to control the relays -

the BOB has 3 jumpers you need fitted when using the relays -
the jumpers should be lablled to indicate which pin controls each relay

and a 4th pin to control the spindle speed , if the BOB has a PWM to analogue converter

you should have 5 input terminals labelled pins 10 to 13 +15 or possibly IN1 to IN5 !
to connect your E-stop switch and home / limit switches

so far I have not found any instructions on line

    John

    Thanks for the reply.
I don’t have the part I front of me, but in order to hVe control of the 4th axis, it appears I need to purchase one more KL step controller or whatever it’s called?

Just wondering what picture would help?
I’m back in school Tuesday and can reload one for you.
But you have to understand, I don’t speak this language so it’ll be more like...”get a red wire... connect it here,,,, and so on and so on.
    Thanks again

The other thing I thought of, if I called you and maybe did a Face Time, or just sent you pics via text and we could talk.

    Hi robwiacek

how did you know how to wire the unipolar motors to the bipolar stepper motor drivers ?

did you have a data sheet for the motor to know which 3 wires goes to each coil ?

high resolution photos of the labels next to the BOB's terminals or a link to the data sheet will help

I do, I looked up the diagrams on Anaheim Automation (I think)
I’d like to send you a pic of the actual wiring on the units

    So the motors are wired.
Now I’m reaching out to try to complete this.

What I don’t know is how to power them.
I hope it can be as simple as... take a red wire... connect it to ....
Put the jumper from here to here.
    Any thoughts John?

I think you need to establish the functions of the connectors labelled P1 to P17.You also need to refer to the guidance for the control software to see what they recommend.Have you selected control software yet?I'm no wiring expert but that BOB looks like it is intended for connection to a parallel port and once again, you need to find out what each connection to the parallel port should be controlling.

As an example-this diagram shows the way in which a LinuxCNC parallel port may be configured.

The rest of the guidance may be found at Configuration Wizard for Stepper-Based Machines .It may not relate exactly to your chosen control software but its all about 0's and 1's so the principles apply.

I’m using Mach 3. Does that help?

It might help a Mach 3 user to tell you what needs to happen. It doesn't help me because I don't use Mach 3-I don't expect there is a huge amount of difference in principle. You need to assign functions to the P1 to P17 connections that can be made to operate by the stream of 0's and 1's coming down the cable.Isn't there a Mach 3 sub forum here somewhere?

Good idea, I’ll check it out.
You’re right though.... it’s all the same language after a bit of translation.

without any data for the BOB or label printed on the board

    BREAK OUT BOARD HELP-bob-3-relays-jpg

you will have to toggle the 12 possible outputs to find which ones are used to control the relays

if they have decided to use pins 2 to 9 for step & direction for 4 stepper drivers

that would leave pins 1 , 14 , 16 & 17 to control the 3 relays and what looks like a PWM to analogue converter

    note -
it looks like the 12 outputs are buffered by three 7414 IC's ( the 16 pin IC's near the 25 pin printer connector )
and if the BOB is like other Chinese BOB's it will take its 5V supply from the computers USB port

a photo of the under side of the board will help to check the USB conector is used just to take 5V from the PC
and not data to a micro controller enableing control via the USB port !

it would be easier to follow if the 24V supply wires was different colours as its not easy to see the black tracer

what's the small power supply for ?

in the photo it's not possible to see the marking on the BOB's terminals connected to the brown and yellow wire

I don’t know why the smaller power is there. Maybe for the limit switches?
I put together these parts under direction of another gentleman on these forums.
    Can’t seem to reach him.
I’ll get a picture of the bottom of the board on Tuesday.
It’s at school and we are closed!
    Thanks for the reply.

this is an example of another Chinese BOB that I reverse engineered a while ago

    BREAK OUT BOARD HELP-chinese-cnc-bob-jpg

the IC's that buffer the printerport and a 5V relay are powered by the USB port but
the opto isolated input circuits and PWM to analogue 10V converter is powered by a 24V power supply

on your BOB the relays are 24V relays
other than that may follow the same basic design

do you have a multimeter to make continuity tests and measure the outputs from the board ??

    This looks great!
I hope I understand what wire goes where.
That’s really how it has to be for me.
    Dummy down.
I hope I can follow it.
AADD will kick in then I’ll move on to something else.
