I have two of the 380 oz motors with 3/8" shafts from Ahren and it does look like the 3/8" shafts are about 1/4" shorter. These motors are installed using DumpsterCNC couplers and I can't easily measure the shafts to prove it. This is just an eyeball comparison.

My early NEMA 23 r&p drives from Ahren have an aluminum pulley with hub for 1/4" shaft.

You will definitely need a pulley with hub.

    Albert,

Sorry for the trouble. The pulleys you have were developed for an OEM customer who is not using our motors (their motors have longer shafts).

We just recently transitioned to 3/8 motors for most R&P applications to allow people to put more tension on the belts, but these pulleys obviously aren't cutting it with our motors due to the shorter shafts. Not to worry, we have a new aluminum pulley that has a large diameter hub and larger set screws, see pictures below. I'm just sorry we didn't catch this before sending you the ones you have.

    Best regards,

    Ahren

    Woot!

Thanks Ahren for sending the replacement pulleys so quickly!

emailed him on saturday of my issues and today, on my way home, a nice package waiting for me at the post office!

    new pulley works great!

hub deep enough for proper seating of the pulley on the shaft and the set screw is bigger and has better grip on the shaft.

    Ok, somewhat productive weekend...

moved router table to final home spot, right under a support I-Beam so i can assemble some carriage for the DC tubes to ride on.

cut and place aluminum angles for cable carriers

mounted cable carrier for X and Y(gantry)

now to figure out how to mount cable carrier for Z...
maybe i'll just go with a flexible tube for Z...

next project, finish wiring for limit/home switches...

That's a good looking setup you have there kinghong1970. You'll be having a lot of fun making stuff with it pretty soon.

Thats a great looking set-up Kinghong and some great ideas for mounting the cable carriers. What are you using for your spindle?

    Chuck,

since i pretty much spent my hobby fund on the machine, i've opted to use an existing PC 690 for the moment...
eventually, i'd love to see about upgrading to a spindle but that's much later on...

thanks C1 and Chuck for your comments.

well, it's been a while since i've last updated this log... life has a way of getting in the way of the fun hobbies.

    minor update:
with the aluminum enclosures, a couple of hours of work with the scroll saw... made the enclosure and mounted the components on the enclosure...

not so happy about this... but this will do for now... i need to connect the SPID lcd to the board now...

Life has a way of getting in the way of hobbies...
anyways, finally had some time to get back on my build... had some decent progress...

and the more i read here and there, the more i find myself saying...

"oh, that's a good idea... why don't i try to..."
and that has led me to countless hours in thinking about air supply for clearing chips... and more hours in thinking of vacuum table...

but finally, sense kicked me in the arse and finally got back on track...

but not before buying some tubing and re-running some tubes... not knowing if they will not kink within the cable carriers...

    *** WARNING!!! ***
    uber noobness beyond this point...

didn't like some of the mounting solutions for the Z cable carrier... so take some alum sheets, cut it, bend it... and pray that it fits... and it did... YAY!

oh, and the mess of cables running in there... lol!
double oh, the screws used to mount the cable carrier is too long and runs into the z motor mount plate... need to chop chop...

still couldn't think of a way to mount limit switches and so, use left over extrusion pieces... drill and tap... and it'll work for now... enough to keep axis from flying off the machine...

despite using shielded cable for all switches and power line for router, still did not like how the cables intertwined with each other within the carrier and so, some wraps... (damn, they are annoying...) and it helped keep them apart...

kinda did hurt, drilling into cncrp's carriages...

anyways, rest of pics got comments on them... so i'll try to keep this short...

today, i had a successful run of 50% of roadrunner... (still working with trial version of mach3... lol)

still need to tweak a bit more here and there... still probably have tons of questions to follow...

not sure but trial version does not allow me to calibrate axis?

but anyways, more reading, more reading and more learning...

thank you in advance for your comments...
    any/all help is much appreciated.

    regards,

    Al

I love that bracket to hold the back of the e-chain. I may have to copy that on my CRP-4848. Nice work.

one note before you copy... make sure it clears the Y-Axis motor.

my plate is about 4.5" height iirc... but i'm traveling and hence can't give you exact specs.

i'm thinking about a plate to cover the Z rails as well... but we'll see.
