UPDATE
I've been a bit slack on the router of late due to another project taking priority, However I have managed to make a housing to bolt the 4th and 5th axis together.
I still need to shorten these two components to make it more compact.
I changed my mind on the way these two axis go together as can be seen in a photo earlier in the thread. I did intend to flycut the 4th axis straight into the housing of the 5th, but i believe this new approach will be much sturdier.
Thats all for now but hopefuly should get back into it in the coming months.

nice build btw! im not debating putting my 5th axis in the spindle, as finding someone to cast my machine base is proving difficult. with the 5th in the spindle i can reduced the machine size a little bit, but i will have to add a second x axis to the spindle.
The spindle I imported from Italy, HSD brand, 4.5kw

I have to watch this one! This is a real neat package so far. I do have a question on your 4/5 configuration though? Where is the spindle going to mount and do you have a sketch or drawing showing that. I have close ties to the Doughty Drives through conversing with him during his development, as well as after he went into production, and I know how his two drives work together. The only way I can see yours working will have the spindle hanging way off to the side. Is that correct?

Hi Mike, Yes the spindle hangs off the side, although i do need to trim this back by about 40mm.
I built my own as Doughty recommended only a 1.5kw spindle and i believe this setup will take my 4.5kw without too much trouble.
I'm going as fast as I can....seriosly i'm getting back on to this soon, i've just been waylaid on another project, although i do have 3.5 weeks in Thailand coming up

A little progress on the machine in the last week or so
I originaly purchase a double row angular contact bearing with the intention of a compact and straight forward rotating nut assembly, but after dialling up the thrust movement was less than impressed with the 0.1+ movement in either direction.
So two deep groove sealed bearings were bought with the intention of preloading them against each other......Time for some router porn:rainfro:

Materials:
130 x 130 x 70mm aluminium stock
2/ 50mm lengths of 80mmdia. round bar.
I started with the split inside assembly ( 80mm round)

Proceeded to turn them down with a 6mm shoulder to load up the internal races of the two bearing agianst one another

Drilled the eight M5 bolts to do the loading and the same bolt patten of the ballnut flange on one of these and also the Drive pulley

To contain two 60 x 95 x 18mm sealed bearing
you can see the internal step used to hold the outer races apart while interal races are squeezed together by the M5 bolts

Stepper mount
With slotted holes to allow for belt adjustment via jacking bolts.
I made a few mistakes on these, I first milled the counterbored slotes on the wrong side....Doh!
Then positioned the these slotes to suit the wrong diameter pulley....Doh!
There are also a few holes that were already in the material I had.

I happy the way it turned out, no noticeable friction from prelaoding is felt and no movement in thrust
$40 each for the bearings and about $66 for the the aluminium.
I'll apply some nutlock to the bolts to stop loosing the preload.

I've posted this in a BC axis thread But to try and keep it all together I should post it here also.
I managed to get a few or things sorted with my BC head along with the rotating nut this last week.
Basicaly I' shortened the two axis to make it more compact,40mm on the C axis and about 30mm on the B

You can make out here how far the stepper is recessed inside the housing(the machined square in centre), this housing is mearly a means of connecting the two turntables at right angles to eachother.

The square attached to B axis is two pices of 12mm plate, one will be welded to the end of the 150 x 150 x 6mm RHS of the Z column, the other bolted to previous after machining for any error in alignment from horizontal in both planes.

I think Wigitmaster has the hugest thread honor all to himself. But yeah, I do pity the poor soul who decides to read my whole build log starting from the beginning. It's like a novel where the plot changes directions every few months in storyline time.
I do really enjoy seeing the machining parts of everyone's build logs. There's a lot to learn from the setups and designs. Keep it coming.

Where did you get the timing pulley from?
I've been trying to find a local (Oz) supplier of a 32 tooth pulley of about 52 mm . The hole spacing on your timing pulley looks the same as the ballnuts I have.

Hi, I sourced them through a local Launceston supplier, Tas Bearing and Chain, but I think they may be Pies brand. they were around $40 but came with the normal Hub on one side that I machined off, bored out the center to 27mm to clear my 25mm screw and drilled with the mill using a indexing head to match screw from linearmotionbearings (TBI Brand http://www.ballscrew.com.tw/ so you won't find a pulley in this configuration.
This by the way is 60 tooth, 5mm pitch.
Find a bearing supply company in your area!
