Importing a CNCRP Pro 4848 into Canada?

Hey guys,

Looking to purchase a 4848, but realized that importing something like this over the border may be expensive via fedex or ups.

I was wondering if it's worthwhile shipping it to a us post box and importing it myself to save some costs. I live about 1.5hrs from the border, and can make the trip. But it would be nice to have it all done for me if it's not atrocious.

In the past, importing a few bits from the states costed me ~30% the price of the bits, and I'd hate to get a bill after receiving for 30% of the cost of the machine (along with import horror stories you always hear about)

If I was to do it myself, is there any tips on helping getting it across the border with ease?

Mail or Snail, same thing really. You will need to 'declare' it and pay import tax. You aren't going to say "Nothing to declare" when asked by the border custom, are you?! ;-)
From experience, importing and associated cost worth each & every pennies in most case. Just crack on with it I'd say...

I am pretty sure it can be shipped to you, but UPS charges a lot to act as a broker for you when Importing. I think Avid is over in Washington state, not sure how far that is from you, but it would all fit
in the back of a pickup easy. Car pulling a trailer would work also. You folks also have a VAT so you will need to deal with that also.

That's the exact answer I was looking for. That's a significant amount of money when looking at the % of the overall cost of the machine. Worth the headache in my eyes going over the border.

I have no problems paying tax at the border! I do mind paying UPS a fat brokerage fee though hahaha

Give UPS a call and ask for a quote before making a round trip. Can't be that unreasonably expensive otherwise they'd be out of business, me think.
Considering the hassle free bureaucracy and door-2-door service provided, you might be better just dosh'ing out the rate they ask for.
Never know, I'd dbl-check before... although a trip down south for a weekend could also be well planned for!

I believe that the UPS brokerage fee is in addition to the import duty fees.

I'm in Ontario and purchased close to $10k CAD for my CNCRouterParts and the UPS customs and brokerage fee was $506CAD. Although I was accidentally charged this twice by mistake by UPS since there was a late package held up in customs, so check your credit card after delivery if this happens. I was able to get the money back from the double charge.
