Dust collection for 4896 Pro with Spindle

I'm waiting on my router to be delivered & I'm trying to get everything ready so when it gets here I can hit the ground running. I know with the faster cutting speed of the router & spindle I'll be creating more chips & dust so I'm wondering if the 1hp Grizzly dust collector I have will do the job? I'd like to build a room on the back of my router building to house my dust collector but I dont want to build it to fit the 1hp if I'm going to need a larger unit.

I doubt a 1HP dust collector would do very well. I have a 5HP Oneida Super Dust Gorilla and wish I would have gone with a the 7.5HP Oneida High Vacuum instead. But I think you’d at least need a true 3 or 5HP to be truly effective with your CNC. Also run the biggest (smooth) line you can to your machine to get the best dust collection possible. I’d also run a 4” offshoot to use to clean up on and around your machine for the dust that doesn’t get sucked up.

I use a 1.5 hp older Oneida dust collector with my 2x3 foot Benchtop Pro. I have a 1.5 kw spindle and the largest bit I use is 1/4 inch. This works fine for me but, if you’re going to use a bigger spindle with larger bits, I think you’ll be happier with a larger dust collector. As David Gage said, the Oneida high vacuum dust collectors are very nice. I used to use my 1.5 hp Oneida to run the dust collection system in my small shop. It was underpowered for that purpose and was replaced with a 5 hp Oneida unit which works much better and eliminated a lot of frustration.

I have a 2.2kW spindle, 2 hp dust collector with Super Dust Deputy and micron air filter, never have any problems with dust.

Yes, it comes in 2 versions 5 & 6 inch. They have adapters for both to reduce to 4".

Gigawatt - they make a deluxe 4" dust deputy, would that be better than the 5 or 6" reduced to 4" also it says the dust deputy works with any .5hp - 5hp dust collector. Would this help the performace of my 1hp grizzly or am I going to need a 2hp reguardless of using the dust deputy or not?

Adding any cyclone will actually reduce suction, due to increased resistance. If a 1HP is all you have, then I would run it direct.

If you go with a larger collector, you'd be better off running 5" all the way to the spindle.

Gerry is correct, you will see a slight reduction in suction volume by adding a vortex separator. However IMHO the gain in efficiency, by reducing clogging of the dc bag or filter, offsets the slight reduction in suction. With 1 hp dc in the 650 cfm range, 2 hp in 1500 cfm range and 5 hp at 3000+ cfm you can see how a larger dc will increase your suction volume. If you dc will be close to your cnc with a short run of pipe, preferably pvc, the 4" Deluxe DD will likely be adequate.

My cnc is strictly for hobby use. It seems yours is setup more towards commercial use. I would use at least 2 hp on your cnc. If your going to run pipe to several machines, use 5" pvc for the main duct.

While manufacturers might publish specs similar to these, you'll never see this much suction in the real world. Which is why a 1HP collector is really not enough.

I picked up a confined space (manhole) ventilator really cheap at a yard sale. It is rated for 1419 cfm, but that is a third party certification not a manufacturers claim. I've found it interesting how much more it will move than the harbor freight 1550 cfm...
