    Default My CNC Mill build

Last year I bought linear rails and ball screws from China also closed loop nema 23 2Nm motors and Mach3 breakout board with mpg.
This year build began . Hopefully this epidemic scare is going to be over soon so we can carry on with fun.
For the beginning I am going to post some pics. As I go forward I'll add pics and some comments.

Awesome build; please keep the posts coming! Did you have to stress-relieve it or did you figure a way around it?

May I suggest checking out the Centroid Acorn for the control? Hardware & software from the same company: https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid...ontroller.html I'm not a salesmen, I have two & love them!

    Milton in Tennessee ya'll!

Forgot to mention aim is to make mill reasonably precise considering cheap ball screws and rails.
So engraving light milling steel but mostly aluminum.
Everything is decided in advance so no changes.
I’m building on cheep with potential to upgrade frame by epoxy granite .
And I am not stress reliving the welds I know from experience how to weld and it is only stitch welded . I have over 30 years of experience as a tool and die and mould maker including a lot of welding and fitting for various other jobs.
Most of material and machine time is a donation (leftovers)from my shop owner .
Have almost everything that I need to buy so far close to 1000$ CAD + 5 Saturdays 6 h each.

Spindle is finished . This is going to be tool change capable spindle with bearing balls and spring washers to retain tool .
Main bearing is VW Golf front wheel bearing washers are 24 pc 1” od 3/8 id 1200 pounds of pul force .
BT40 taper is chosen for cheap holders plus I can borrow some Cat 40 from work (special pull stud ).
Planing to use automotive J belt (Quiet)

Taking in account chip china linear rails I am impressed with results.
Yes they are little out on rolling momentum (block on rail not parallel) ,1 out of 12 blocks -.003" shimmed, others +- few tenths.
Worth the money I spend on it in my opinion.
Upon further testing of the table parallelism results are:
    Y axis .0001"
    X axis .0002"
Squareness .0005" (Machinist Square from Poland 6x8" could be out )
    Table edge .0002 over 12"

Looks like you're doing some nice work there. Before you get too much further you might want to consider cutting holes in your large tubes and filling them with some sort of epoxy-granite mix. I used sand with no other filler mixed with thin epoxy and it is amazing- you would see a big difference. Filling in the tube that holds the spindle would help a lot also.

Yes I know and have some openings to fill some sort of damping material.
Stuffing rags in Z column made some improved noise reduction. I like to stay at low weight until permanent position is determined.
Spindle tube is left open so I can ad coolant cooling the spindle but not whole tube only last 4" and make a sealed plate cupping the end .
Like to stay light as possible was thinking of perlite epoxy mix or concrete perlite (did some BBQ insulating plates perlite+concrete light and rigid ) but would hate to remove if no good.

Very nice! I like the spindle, especially. What kind of 'grabber' are you planning for you ATC, ball bearing or petal type? Machining for ball bearing grabber looks straightforward vs the more complicated petal type in many spindles these days. Did you, or are you planning to, harden the 40 taper?

    JR
