Default 6040 X axis strengthening again.

Have been thinking about this some more and have an idea I was wondering what you guys thought.
I've seen others connect the Z axis to the X axis via a linear rail but they seemed to complicated to me.

Do you think this will improve the machine and is worth the effort. ( should not be too hard to install.)

    A pic of my machine:

A quick cad drawing of what I propose:

I've not drawn the Spindle and I have missed some fasteners on the bottom of teh plate....

It's hard to say, if it is going to help, is this to help with the Z axes top mounting plate from flexing, the Ballscrew has a lot of power so may still push up even with your mod, Box the whole Z axes if you can like the top plate down to the bottom plate on both sides if you can just 6mm material would do

Is there no back plate on your X axes slide tying the linear Bearings together, this would be a good starting point 8mm to 10mm plate

Hi Sterob - More pics of your machine and a description of what it is doing and what you want to fix? Hard to tell from current words. Peter

Mod is to hopefully stop movement in the unsupported xAxis rails. ie
Z axis vertical movement. Idea is to brace against the gantry.

Only thin Ali plate on back of x axis atm.
Will take some more pics tonight.
    Thanks for the feedback.

Some more pics...not sure if they help or not....very hard to see whats going on.
I think the machining forces would be twisiting the x axis, causing the z axis to move the same way.
The z axis also has unsupported rails but they are alot shorter so are less prone to be problematic.
I'm not sure 'boxing ' the top and bottom plate of teh z axis would do the trick.

This is what others have done. Don't know if they were successful or not.

A plate on both sides as from your photo would do much the same thing, you may have to step the plates out to get clearance for the Z axes slide a thicker back plate would help some rigidity but won't solve the problem of unsupported rails

Its the the flexing of the unsupported rails I am trying to reduce. I thought bracing the top of the Z axis to the Gantry side plates would go a good way to doing that.

Its suposed to be a quick fix to improve my 6040 until I can get a new t slot machine built.

Maybe 'boxing' the z axis, like you suggested, and a brace to the Gantry plates, will improve hings more.

Yes correct a stronger back plate will help but won't solve an unsupported rail problem completely, any mods you do will help these machines
