Default DC Servo Drive Recommendations for Acorn

I have an older Anilam Crusader M 3 Axis Mill and would like to retro-fit with the Acorn. However, I would like to keep my DC power supply and also my SEM servo motors. The voltage on the DC power supply and motors in 140V DC. I looked at Viper Drives, but they won't interface with the Acorn to close the loop and detect any positioning errors. Anyone have any recommendations?

    Thank You,
    Steve

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Acorn is not a closed loop control.

Gerry is correct. The Acorn is a step/dir axis controller and only has one encoder input which is intended for the spindle. There is no encoder feedback for the axis drives. That said, you could tie the fault and/or warning output from the Vipers (or any other step/dir servo drive) into the Acorn to get notified of following errors.

This sounds like an ideal system to upgrade to a Centroid ALLIN1DC system.

I agree with cen199. The ALLIN1DC is the ideal upgrade path for you. You may need to install new encoders on those motors.

Thank you everyone. I think I am going to go with the Allin1DC. I will add US Digital E5 encoders to the end of the shafts in the SEM motors. I appreciate everyone's help.

Has anyone else used anyone else's encoders?

    Thank You,
    Steve

I am in the middle of a acorn upgrade using viper drives. First gen viper 200s.I had to Use a 5 volt power supply and tied the 24 volt and 5 volt commons together. No viper schematic on the centroid site. I based the connections from site examples of Gecko and Dyn 2 and 4 drives.I used the actual screw terminals for my setup.
