Default Stepcraft S600 losing steps / backlash hassles. Time to graduate?

    Hi all,

My Stepcraft S600 w/ UCCNC controller is really hacking me off. It has been my introduction to machining, and yes, it's been quite fun, but I'm sick and tired of the machine's limitations. Losing steps is probably the worst problem, but a close second is continually having to tighten the screws (I fitted adjustable ones, and made modifications to the machine so that I didn't have to disassemble anything to be able to get to them).

I'd be most grateful if anyone has advice on the losing steps problem. Is there a miracle cure? Ha!

I'd also greatly appreciate if you could give me some suggestions about graduating to a machine of about the same size that would solve these issues - i.e. ballscrews and some different form of encoding the motion.

    Man, I'm frustrated.

    Thanks.

You should be able to fix the lost step issue fairly easily, unless it's caused by mechanical issues. Just reduce the Accel and Velocity until it stops losing steps.

If you want something better, perhaps an AVID CNC Pro Benchtop. Be prepared to pay quite a bit more that you paid for the Stepcraft.
