Grizzly G0602 Lathe CNC Conversion

I have a Grizzly G0602 that I converted to CNC with BDTools ballscrews and kit. Was running in Mach3. Didnt do much with it and it sat in the corner for quite a few years. I decided to dust it off and get it going again. Heres what I'm in the process of doing.

1) Pathpilot Conversion - X and Z moving well, need to get the spindle going.
2) Spindle Encoder
3) Full enclosure build.
4) 3PH Motor / VFD swap
5) 5C collet

Heres a shot of where it stands. I'll keep the build log going.

Got the motor pulled and the new 3 phase motor installed. Will hook up the vfd tomorrow. Tip: Grab one of these 14mm Gear Wrenches with the ratcheting closed end. The more clicks the better. Doesnt make it easy, but it does make it possible.

Got the encoder mount installed. Now gotta figure out how to hook it up to PMDX126.

nice use of 3D printed parts. What material did you print them with? I've been wanting to experiment with something like NylonX or the Carbon-fiber infused stuff.

These are all printed from PETG. I like it a lot better than PLA or ABS. Never tried Nylon or Carbon Fiber filament. Carbon Fiber wears out nozzles pretty quick.

Yep, I already have a handful of hardened nozzles, and a couple Ruby'$$.

Encoder now working. I am measuring actual rpm's in HALMETER.

Not sure I would use it again though. It works great, but its expensive for what it is (~vs~ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and the cabling connection options are pretty limited.

Welded up some mobile bases for the G0602 today.

look good...hopefully you dont keep tripping over them.
Also, I have my Hardinge on skates...but once I did that it now cuts a taper. So I will probably be taking it off of them. Maybe modify them to add jack screws.

A few updates since I last posted...

1) I ended up going with a different encoder. I ended up using https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
2) I mounted NEMA cabinets to the back of the machine with a custom mount I welded up. From the back, the cabinet on the left holds the VFD and a 220v contactor. The cabinet on the right holds all of the electronics. The VFD contactor engages when I power up the electronics.
3) Added the mobile bases as previously mentioned.
4) Everything is working in Pathpilot v2.8.3. Quite a bit of work, but I'm super happy with the outcome. I'm still using the conversational tools for everything I have made so far. Havent even needed fusion 360 to produce parts.
5) Breakout is controlled by a PMDX 126 connected to a Mesa 7i92h.
6) I have a functional hand MPG pendant that I designed that is working for my mill, and partially for the lathe. I intend to replace the previous manual lathe electronic controls (buttons) and incorporate all of the functions on the pendant in the front of the lathe. https://www.cnczone.com/forums/torma...r-pendant.html

I still need to:
- build an enclosure.
- get some form of cooling. I have a decent design in mind for a DIY fogbuster for my Mill. Does anyone know if a fogbuster will work for a lathe too? Would be nice not to have flood cooling on this lathe.

I just didnt like the way that you had to wire the one I was using. It connected via a ribbon cable and I didnt want to run a ribbon cable 3 feet or so to the control box through the machine. Still using the same mount and belt drive that I was using, just had to modify the encoder mount a bit to get it to fit.
