Think something went wrong with my ballscrew

A bit tongue in check but I think something isn't right.



Anyone have a 1605 ballnut with flange for sale? New double ballnuts would be preferable./ I have bearings and shims so the nut with plastic recirculators would work for me


I think all of these are supposed to be round......

what happen ? Did this just give out seeing that the balls have flats on them this has been going on for a bit. Ebay and amazon has the double ball nut for cheap

Looks like some heavy grinding(?) on that flange. If enough heat is generated it could cause problems ? Just a guess based on no experience.

Off topic question, does China sell flange-less ballnuts like the old Nook and Roton ? I'm working on a project with limited clearance.

Looks like you need a new double ball nut. Might as well get the whole thing nut and screw off Ebay. Is that a G0704 saddle?

Yeah it's a G0704. The grinding was done 4 years ago and I thought I took precautions to keep the heat down. Also this machine is run a lot so maybe it was just time.

I believe they do sell the flange less nut. You may have to contact linear motion bearing to get one. Technically the second nut is flange less in this setup.

Anyone know what grade and material is best for the ball bearings? How about a good supplier? I was looking at 52100 with a tolerance of .0001"

I think the nut and screw are good, just need some new recirculaters. Think Arizonavideo will be hooking me up.

Chances are that event that damaged the balls also damaged the nut. Did you examine the screw closely, with magnification?

Bal-tec has any and every ball that was ever made..https://www.precisionballs.com/index.php The question is, do you want to put new balls into an assembly that may have unseen damage..I wouldn't.

atomarc: have you chosen balls from bal-tec that are within the price range of hobbyists? I have looked at their prices and they seem to be for high end, professional rebuilds.
If you have, can you post a link to the product?

I did order balls from Bal-tec to tighten up a ball nut, but I don't remember what that ball nut was on and I sure don't remember them being that expensive, although when you purchase gobs of them the price drops dramatically.

I agree. If I recall in my case, it was a situation where the ball screw or linear rail needed to be 'just so', and the customer was paying for it in the end, so all I wanted was the best result, which I got. When I built my project, https://www.cnczone.com/forums/bench...24194-cnc.html I bought the ball screws from Dave at arizona video https://www.arizonacnckits.com/, and at that time you could purchase assemblies that he had re-balled to achieve better backlash control. Have you spoken to him about your situation? He is a real good guy and will help you out.

I did purchase balls from ball tec. With double nut screws you are going to use .125 balls and shim to remove backlash. I was able to purchase:

CHROME STEEL BALL 0.125", 3.175 mm, 1/8" Grd:10

for $23 plus $13 shipping.

Dave aka Arizonavideo was able to send me some returns. I inspected the nut and it appeared to be fine. I have it all rebuilt and its working but I have a bit of harmonic noise as I drive the screw at speeds over 60 ipm. The noise will go away if I lift on the back side of the stepper motor. I may have a gib too tight or a misalignment with the motor. The noise is only in one direction and that is the direction. I didn't have much time to inspect the issue before having to head off to work this weekend.

Either way I think I will be ordering another set of screws to have as backups. Being down for two weeks cost me $$$.
