Default How to remove pulley from Belt Drive upgrade on X2 Mini Mill

Hi! I've installed an Belt Drive upgrade kit on my mini mill some years ago.

But when installing it, I didn't remove the spindle completely from it's casing, so I removed the plastic gears but not the spindle gear. When I run my mill on higher speeds, that last gear sometimes makes noise.

And I want to replace the original bearings to angular contact ones. So I want to dissassemble the head again to remove the spindle, that remaining gear, and change bearings.

I've seen some how to's on how to remove the spindle and bearings on a stock X2 mill, before the belt drive kit was assembled. But I don't know how to pull that large pulley from the spindle. Can anyone give me a hint, or share some pics?

These two pics show how the kit is assembled in different views. Nowadays I removed all the fine feed and other stuff because it's being converted to cnc.

    Thanks in advace.

I don't think the pully has a press fit. If the pulle is stuck, you need a puller. If you don't have on, be creative and make one. To remove the gears, you also have to make some kind of tooling.

On the side below, you find some articles about disassembling sieg mills and lathes. I suggest you also read the disassembling lathes parts, it will give you some ideas about making the tools to do it.

I used a screwdriver to prise my pulley off being careful not to damage it.
The plastic gears all come off easily once the spindle and head are in bits.
The hardest part is getting the keyway keys out afterwards imo.
You will need a puller for the bearings.
It was easier to knock the spindle half out with the head on once pulley, bearing cover etc was removed.
Use a solid plastic hammer or hammer and wood block to do this while head is supported in place so not to damage threads at spindle top.
Once you get started it isn't too bad to do.

These instructions below are pretty damn good.

    Pulley:

Spindle: (R8 slightly different but similar process)

Make yourself a tool to fit new bearings like this below. Makes life loads easier.

I used a piece of tube, made some bushings on the Sieg, M10 threaded rod, M10 washers and nuts.
The second spindle link demonstrates it in use.

I did the full upgrade with mine using all these instructions.
    AC bearings.
    Pulley set.
    R8 spindle conversion.

    Thanks!! Pretty good information!!

Can you share what model/brand of AC bearings did you use? If read it should be the 7206b 2RS ones. Did you notice any improvement by replacing the bearings?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi again!
I ordered two AC sealed bearings, 7206B-2RS, as my spindle is MT3.
I copied the LMS shop kit and disassembled the spindle and original bearings.

I have one more question though. In the LMS instructions, the bearings are first inserted in the spindle and the spindle with bearing is pulled to the head of the mill. As for angular contacts bearings, is it better do the as the instructions (that were written for normal bearings) or should the AC bearings be adapted separately in the head (lower and upper) and then the spindle be pulled through them??

    Thanks!
