How does RPM equate to HP ?
Don
Hi Forum,
my stock 90V Spindle motor decided to give up the ghost (tripping the house circuit and overheating etc...). In light of this I need to replace with stock unit or look for another option/s. from what I understand the stock spindle is 6800 RPM capable and equates to 0.08 HP . Any suggestions in terms of power / duty cycle and generally 'better' stuff?

It could be the motor, but it could also be the speed control that's burned up. If you send it to Sherline, they'll figure out which it is and sell you a replacement.
While .08 HP doesn't sound like a lot, with one of these full-wave DC motors you get a lot more torque than with a regular AC split-phase or induction motor, and you get it at whatever speed it's dialed at. These are continuous-duty motors, and as Sherline points out on their site, they far outperform the 1/2 HP motors they used to use. I'm not sure you'll find a better motor without getting one that's a lot bigger and heavier. See 3308 Headstock and Motor Unit with ER-16 Spindle Nose - Sherline Products
