.The other project over the weekend was to solve the problem of numbering the tool holders for the mill. I've been using metallic stickers but the text wears off, or the sticker does not stay in place because of the coolants, oils etc.

I figured that engraving the number into the holder could be the answer although the case hardening of the holders may be problematic. In the end I decided to engrave the ER Nuts on the holders. The Nuts are a dark colour so the engraving should contrast well.

In the end, I'm pleased with how they turned out.

I used the rotary table to hold the tool holders to position the nut and rotate it easily for the six flats.

Initially I'd planned to engrave the six flats in a single program run but found that when the nut was rotated, so I reset the Z height after each rotation and reran the program.

I used the text function in Sheetcam to produce the G-Code. The text height is 6mm.

After I engraved the the first 3 flats (every 2nd flat) I realised that the 6 and the 9 could be confusing, so after I engraved the second three with the dot, I added the other tree dots in manually.

I engraved a few more nut, but have quite a few to go and am really happy with the outcome. One of the advantages of engraving the nuts, is that the holder can be reassigned to another number by changing the nut.

I still need to work out what to do with the holders that don't have nuts. I may use CNC Wrapper and engrave the number on the circumference of the holder, but for the moment, I'll keep using the stickers on them.

    Cheers,

    Peter

I don't need much, just enough to cover the rpm display. Something like 100mm x 50mm should be plenty.

    Thanks,

    Peter

Ok, I am totally going to rip off the idea of putting that on the front of the mill. I just need need a spindle on/off and speed up/down buttons and maybe a start/abort. That would be awesome.

Thanks Peter. I'll have a look around as well. With all the LED displays around, I'd have expected that it would be easy to source.

The most difficult bit is lining up the existing mounting holes on the mill head. On my will they were all hand drilled on various angles. My backup plan was to drill new mount holes, hidden under the orange panel. For that though I'd have to take the mill head off the mill to use the drill press, otherwise they would be as out of alignment as the original ones.

    Hi all,

I was playing around with the new touch today. I made a new "short" cable to run to the socket on the front panel.

Nice addition. Does it disable the spindle once the probe is plugged in? ;-)

Interestingly, as soon as I plugged the cable in, I thought "That's going to make a mess if the spindle starts!"

No it doesn't. If I used a 4 pole connector on the PCB I could detect when the cable is plugged in, and with a bit of circuitry use it to disable the VFD.

I'm not going to put the effort to design that in. Well not until I start the spindle with the probe in and wreck everything.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Awwww, what fun is that!?! You're supposed to learn these things the hard way like I love to do.

I like the fact he implemented a good idea that really started as a joke. Safety if cheaply attainable is best. I might even be a consumer of another of his products ;-)

Yep, and the safety interlocks you don't have to think much about are the best kind. That's why I like this site. I'd likely never think of that either until a mishap enlightened me.

I think there are also 1/8" jacks with a switch on them to mechanically detect when something is plugged in. They're what laptops and cell phones use to mute the speakers when you plug your headphones in.
