Starting phase I tommorow. If I run direct z-axis what speeds were you getting, 570 ozin motors with the kl 5060d drives...I actually have the kl8056d to run a comparison with at 48v. I'm kind of on the fence about the 2:1 z vs the direct drive.

    Brian
Well, you shouldn't see any difference between the 8056D and the 5056D since they are both being run at 48V.
Technically you could see a minute difference, I had to set the power supply to 44.5 V for the 5056D to come in under
it's failsafe (the LED will flash), you should be able to go 50V.
Are you using the stock Z screw? Go direct drive or the speed will suffer.
The 570 works great direct drive with the 5tpi ballscrew so the stock screw will
run about half as fast as is.

Keling recommended turning down the pots and running the 5060d at 45v or less, and gave me a little deal on that power supply. I originally wanted an unregulated so I'd have more head room. He's pretty conservative on his pairing and I know guys are over volting the drives. I don't expect much difference, but I have one so we'll see.

Yes, I've got just about everything I need to start the phase I, we decided to start there.

I got the mill in june and just uncrated it. I'm alittle worried about the motor/board as the july 2010 shipments seemed to have issues. Break in was fine, if I have a problem I like it to be under warrentee.

Just a note for the guys dissing Grizzly and their customer service
When I uncrated the mill it was cool, but the stand came out of the box and the front corner was mashed severly, big dent, 1.5" from flat. No damage to the box and it's been about 10 months that the mill has been in my possesion. Figured I was screwed, sent an email to Grizzly over the weekend, had a reply, sent some pictures, got a phone call and they are sending a new stand when they get one from the west coast. Very nice, professional, excellent service.

Thanks but not something I concern myself with.
I recommend things that I like not because I'm looking for compensation.
That way I stay credible and not biased I hope.

Probably stupid on my part but at least I don't feel beholden.

The little 5C lathe is coming together nicely.
The Shars 4 inch 4-jaw chuck is pretty big looking on it but it'll do well.
Gotta bore the L pulley 45mm, mount the motor and the leadscrew with a hand crank
and it should be ready to make some chips.
Now where did I put that leadscrew 4 years ago.

So much for the old leadscrew for the 7x10, it's somewhere in the haystack.
As I thought about it, it wouldn't work the way I wanted anyhow.
I needed a left hand thread screw for manual use and I have one on hand that will work great,
the g0704's old Y axis screw.
Will crank out a mounting plate tomorrow and it should be good to go.
Will be a breeze to CNC it later reusing the G0704's front mount Y axis parts too.
Then I have to start thinking Turret.

G0704 in a weekend, well we tried.

Almost, screwed up the z-extension, well its pretty close but the internal pocket depth only leaves a little meat and it will probably shear. Lots of lathe work turning down the 0.75 steel to 0.5 for the stand offs, thats all I had. Hats off to Hoss as the parts fit, but we made some mods.

Rapids on the phase 1 at 100-120ipm, the x-axis binds or loses steps in the last 1" of travel. Just waiting on the timing pulleys for the z. Need to make some tee nuts to clamp some stock and start cutting something.

A tad more progress on the 5C collet lathe, the Z axis screw is ready to go.
The G0704 Y screw is the perfect length.

Are you going to put that stubby lathe on the g0704 as a rotory axis?

LOL! Hoss, you kill me man. Give the guy a box of parts from this and that and he whips out a franken-lathe in a few days! Meanwhile I take several days to make a nut.

Don't feel bad, I technically started this project a year ago.

This will go on the G0704 so I can use it as a cnc lathe for a while.

The motor and controller are mounted.
I have the big pulley held in position to measure for the L-belt.
Should have it thurs from mcmaster.
Time to get the big pulley bored to 45mm.
My knees don't feel up to going downstairs to use the g0602 so
I'll use the mill with the rotary table, then finish to size with the boring head.
Can't wait to have easy access to a lathe again, every shop needs one.

    The drawbar is 7/16 diameter.
The MAD uses the same bellevilles as used in the X2 power drawbar.

    Thanks,
The machine is at the shop an I'm home right now looking for a job. McMaster is essentially a drop ship overnight to me. I got the tormach tool holders in the initial set, that should be a fun and useful mod.

Any thoughts on how to get a B&S tool holder out of a spindle, seems the quick change tool holder has a burr or mushroomed head and I cant get the tool holder out to put in the boring head on my manual mill...fubar. Probably need to take it apart and sent to Well-Index and have them grind the thing to r8.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    The console is done.
    Ha, I wish.
Mounted most of the switches though.
Will fill the empty holes with parts from the G0704 but they are being used still.

    Thanks!
I'm glad the video monitor works, I finally checked it.
I'll have several selectable inputs for it,
the camera inside the enclosure to see how it's running
    An optical tool setter
    my home security cameras
    tv/dvd
and 2 more I haven't thought of yet.
Got the monitor on ebay, it's supposed to be for a car dvd player to mount in a headrest or visor.
The keypad will be for a number of things including my probing functions.

I'll most likely make a new screenset for the 0704.
That's what I like about Mach 3, I can make it suit me.
