    Default help with tooling

    Hi All,
Well we bit the bullet and have ordered our Chinese build CNC router.
1200 x1200 cut, 3kw spindle manual tool change which i am sure will be upgraded in the near future ( yes at $$), but just need to get started 1st up.

Bit sick and tired of placing orders for small runs with pro's that push us out the back(understandable) and dont deliver on the precision we need, so hopefully ( fingers crossed ) we can control our destiny.
We are in a high tech industry and not scared of anything that is driven by a PC but having started the learning curve even before the unit arrives, i'm surprised just high tech and problematic cnc can be.
Starting to get the SW learning curve under control.
Our jobs will be mainly plastics ( acetal ) up to 25mm thick, carbon fibre sheet (max 2mm thick) and some light duty Aluminium work.

While we have the SW side of things under control, I need some advice on tooling up with cutters.
Have looked at the Iscar site, which seems to have nice gear but would welcome suggestions as to where the go to place is.We would as a minimum need 3mm CF cutters, 3, 4, 6 and 12mm cutters for acetal and aly
Are there any specialised travelling salesmen that represent various brands who can recommend tooling based upon our needs ??
We are based in Dandenong, VIC
    Any feedback appreciated.

I am based in Hallam, and can assist in the software, installation, setup, provide training, or do your cad/cam for you.

Iscar is a modular system that is centred around inserts. While Adrian will be happy to visit you and sell you something fixed, in truth you will be best ordering cheap cutters from ebay.

Hi, Ebay is OK if you're not in business and don't need to tax deduct your outgoings.....the 10 day shipping time is a killer if you want it now.

Another local big supplier is Hare and Forbes, .located at Fowler road just off the South Gippsland Highway entrance in Dandenong.... a bit more pricey, but they do have a supply and variety for most needs.

Yes, I have bought from them in the past, and yes, I will try very hard to not do it again.

Frankly, by carefully selecting what Hong Kong and Chinese engineering suppliers I use, I get far better quality gear from them at a fraction of the price. There of course a number of dodgy brothers out there as well.
True, as Ian says, their postal service is a shade slow ...

    Cheers
    Roger

EDIT: on the other hand, after some unhappy experiences, I will not buy Chinese drill bits. I buy Dormer, from Bolt&Industrial, end of story.

For the price difference I can often have ten spares for the price of a local tool and they are usually just as good.

    Just sayin.

I read somewhere that Kodiak produce good quality cutters at reasonable price levels.
Cant seem to get onto their website, getting a blocking message.
Many of their tools are listed on Amazon but few if any in metric sizing.

Yeah, I know a guy he only uses Sidchrome tools regardless. He even bought a big display board and likes to sit there and just look at them.

Cutters aren't about brand names; there about what is the right cutter for the job? For one job we use a Guhring cutter because nothing else exists with the required radius. For another job we use a Iscar bull nose because of its extended flute length, for another job we use Y.M.X end mill because they provide adequate finish, little deflection, and are cheap as chips. Your approach to this subject is wrong.

In regards to ebay, its amusing handlewanker that you would rather go to somewhere like Hafco to pay 50% more... just so you can then claim your 10% GST.

because nothing else exists with the required radius
    Seems logical to me.

I wanted a few 1.1 mm ball nose carbide cutters. I couldn't find any. But I could find 1.2 mm ball nose, from CarbideChiu on eBay. So I emailed him and asked about 1.1 mm, uncoated, better than HRC45.
He replied yes could do, but they would be a little more expensive because they would be custom-made. The price was reasonable, so I asked for 5 (at a few $$ each).
When they turned up they were coated HRC65 carbide, individually packaged, and exactly to size. That was slightly ABOVE my spec, but apparently they were cutting and coating that sort of carbide at the time. They cut nicely.

If you want cheap-cheap-cheap, the Chinese are happy to oblige. If you want a certain spec, they are also happy to oblige.

    Cheers
    Roger
