I see people setting up tool holders with the insert on the bottom. On an lb-15 which way is the preferred way, top or bottom? What are the benefits, if any, other than the chips falling away from the tip to have the insert on the bottom?

Thanks,
Scott

I have an LB-15 in the shop, I have never seen a CNC lathe, Okuma or other that the top of the part rotates away from you, with a clockwise command (M3) the reason is a CNC lathe has over travel soft and hard switches, you just can't, under normal circumstance get the turret that far down, if you were boring conventionally, on the side of the part that were closest to you, you simply don't have the travel, without hitting those switches.
Say for example you were boring a 15 inch diameter you would need to be 7.5 inches past X 0.0, manually this is feasable not on CNC. Besides that, we're CNC guys, were better, and different, right? Isn't that enough? Robert
