I've noticed when my wire tends to get dark it would not make sharp cuts anymore. I switch the wire and fix the problem, but the piece I am working on gets trashed.

Is there a more scientific way of determining when to switch the wire? Does the resistance in the wire diminishes or what could me measured to determine when to change them? How does heat affect the conductivity of a wire?

I'm using a .015" 7 strand SS wire 55" long 26 volts DC and had never had it turn black, it usually snaps after a few months..
