I have just assembled my Taig mill and need some help.

I got a controller box with 4 cables but none of them were marked with any axis letters. Will it be the same what cable I put on the different axis?

Which free-download programs will be the easiest to start with in order to test the steppers?

Well...
You can download the demo of Mach3 and use that.
You can then set each motor to whichever axis you wish.
But you will need to know which pins on the parallel port the controller uses for step & direction for each motor. Whoever sold you the control should tell you that...
