View Full Version : CNC Tapping

I am trying to set up a tapping job with a Procunier 2e using a 1/4 20 tpi tap. In the tool setup I set the Reverse Multiplier to 200%, pitch to 20 TPI, Axial travel to 0, underfeed to 5% and RPM to 940. This generated the following G-Code for Mach3.

N0010 (Filename: TAP.tap)
N0020 (Post processor: Mach3.scpost)
N0030 (Date:26/01/2014 Time:07:02:42)
N0040 G20 (Units: Inches)
N0050 G40 G90 G91.1
N0060 F1
N0070 (Part: DREMEL395)
N0080 (Operation: Tap, DIMENSIONS, T10: Procunier 1/4-20 tpi, 0.5 in Deep)
N0090 S940 G00 Z6.0000
N0100 (Procunier 1/4-20 tpi)
N0110 T10 M06
N0120 G43 H10
N0130 G00 Z0.1250
N0140 S940 M03
N0150 M49
N0160 G95
N0170 X2.0000 Y-1.0000
N0180 Z0.0394
N0190 G01 Z-0.500 F0.0475
N0200 F393.7008
N0210 Z0.039 F0.095
N0220 G00 Z0.1250
N0230 X-2.0000 Y-0.5000
N0240 Z0.0394
N0250 G01 Z-0.500 F0.0475
N0260 F393.7008
N0270 Z0.039 F0.095
N0280 G00 Z0.1250
N0290 Y1.0000
N0300 Z0.0394
N0310 G01 Z-0.500 F0.0475
N0320 F393.7008
N0330 Z0.039 F0.095
N0340 G00 Z0.1250
N0350 M48

I have a question regarding this G-Code

N0190 G01 Z-0.500 F0.0475
N0200 F393.7008
N0210 Z0.039 F0.095

I understand that N0190 commands a Z axis move to -.50 with a feed rate of .0475 per revolution (G95 on N0160) and that N0210 reverses direction at twice the speed. What I do not understand is what does N0200 do?

Thanks in advance for an answer to this.

Good morning,
I'm no expert on G-Code, but the N0200 is right after the tapping, and again on line N320. The direction on the Procunier will reverse, but not the machine spindle. This may have something to do with the code. Whenever I see 3937, metric always seems to be involved in some way. Is it too dangerous to run the program without the Pocunier on the spindle and see what happens?

Thanks for posting metalfixer!

After I posted this I did run the gcode at a 2" elevation. Nothing seemed to happen on n0200. I did some more digging and found that there is a setting for axial travel in the tapping head setup. If you enter a distance here, then n0200 would show a move toward Z0 at F393.7. This is just a little bit faster than my machine is capable of! Without an entry for axial travel, Sheetcam still puts the feed rate on this line, but it doesn't do anything.

To make a long story short, I now have the Procunier running and it is beautiful. Makes tapping so easy.

Glad to hear it's working. What spindle are you using? Any chance of a picture of your setup?
Thanks, Larry

Spindle is R8. Here is the picture of the mounted 2E. I also have a 1E.

Thanks for the prompt reply, like the bracket for the rod.
