I have a 1 1/2 hp 220 V 3 phase motor that I will be using to power the spindle on my homemade cnc mill. I now need a VFD for it.

Currently I only have 110V power in the shop so ideally a 110v single phase to 220 v 3phase drive would be best. However, the closest drive I find that meets that is only rated at 1hp. Anything bigger is 220 V single to 220 V 3 phase and thus I would have the extra expense of bringing in 220 v single phase power. Doable, but not overly appealing as we have the house up for sale and would like to move this summer.

What would be the downside of using a vfd rated for 1 hp to power a 1 1/2 hp motor?

You should have 220Volt, single phase in your shop. If you have it coming from the pole, You should have (2) legs with 110 Volt which when checked acrosss hould measure 220Volt.
