Default awesome and free 3d scanner software. (it uses an xbox Kinect)

so Im making a light duty CNC and wanted to add a 3d scanner so I could reproduce items, out of a stroke of luck I found this guy who is making software that uses a xbox Kinect to make a real time 3d model of anything, not only is it super fast but what amazed me was that it refines the model the more it sees the object. you really have to see it to believe it. you dont even have to place it on a turn table or in a special set up corner like dave3d, in another of his videos he walks around with the Kinect and it maps his whole desk in ever increasing detail.

the guy just sent me an a message and now they are taking beta testers... you can go to his site above or his blog to find out more but I think his demo videos kinda speak for themselves on how awesome this is.

    Default OpenKinect

There is a group that has been using the Kinect as a scanner with free open PC software for some time. Check out openkinect.org

Got it working at home. Once I updated my video drivers it worked.

I will look on their forums and try to learn how to utilize it.

The 3D printing video in the ReconstructMe website says that the model can be output as an STL file.
Would be great to see a small model output from the software.

    Cheers

Tried this on two different computers with no luck. You have to have a good graphics driver to get the reconstruction to work. Anyone interested should check the chart on the site for compatible drivers/card.

Does any one know what the tolerances are for the models? I look all over and could not find them.

I spent about 6 hours playing with this, and found the resolution to be very poor. I found some posts where people had placed reading glasses on the Kinect lens and got much better resolution, but for me, it really doesn't seem to be a good choice for 3D scanning.

based on this previous post it got me to thinking. I believe the lenses are set to focus 6-9 feet away and that might be the issue. I saw a addon that you could buy for the kinect that lets you get closer to the unit incase the room you play your games in is too small. It costs $30.00

Do you think this might be a help?

Have you done anymore with ReconnectMe?

Trying to set it up with XBOX 360 Kinect, having difficulty with the set up for scanning, any advise?

    Thanks
    HH

I tried ReconstructMe back in the day, but had no luck with it. Skanect (Pro) worked a lot better. They seem to be still in business, and have an app that works with the Xbox 360, although apparently only for non-commercial use: Get Skanect - Skanect 3D Scanning Software By Occipital

If that doesn't work, or you want to use your scans commercially, I can sell you a Sense2 scanner, which comes with its own software.
