I posted the initial description of this product here. I was surprised that it was not listed I rate it a ten for its bipolar capabilities and price. Read the manual on the buildyouridea.com web site and you will see what I mean. It gets you into part of the gecko territory for a reasonable price.

I have had my 8x14 for over a year now. Its extremely ridgid and provides excellent finishes. It is literally 3 or 4 times the machine that my HF 7x10 is. It runs smooth and vibration free with a 3 jaw. I also have the lathemaster 5c collet chuck. After I had it for about a month the motor died. I called and left a message at lathemaster and less than 48 hours later I had a brand new motor on my door step. The lathe now has about 800 hours of run time on it and its just as sweet as the day I got it. I plan to add a tread mill motor for variable speed like James Green did in the Lathemaster group on yahoo. But I have been using it so much I haven\'t had time to shut down and do it. I liked it so much that I purchased a second 8x14 to add cnc to. This lathe is as good as it gets as far as import lathes in its category are concerned. John

I recently purchased all the products except the charge pump offered by cnc4pc.com. I am quite happy with what I received. Because this system is modular (a board for each category) trouble shooting is quite easy if you ever have a problem. Their index pulse setup for use on lathes is compact and easy to use. The only thing you provide is an interupter disk on the spindle. The other feature is very reasonable cost for each of the boards. The other thing I like is that wire connections are all on the periphery of each of the boards. To sum it up, its great bang for the buck and very easy to set up for nice wire harnesses. You end up with a very professional looking setup when you are done. John

I have built 2 of these boards. Performance is excellent with 200 inch ounce steppers. I think you could easily drive a bigger stepper (maybe not to its max capability) but still bigger than 200 inch ounce. Assembly takes less than two hours with a few cups of coffee and detailed inspection for solder bridges. I just received 2 of the 4 axis boards from hobbycnc. I guess that tells you I am quite happy. I live in the Lightning capitol of the world (Ocala,Florida) and being able to repair my electronics is just a plain must! This is where the hobby cnc board is great. You easily replace damaged parts and Dave is happy to supply them at economical prices. It may not be able to handle 7 amps like the gecko, but then if you only need 3 amps or less and 40 volts, I consider it to be a best buy. If you know what a good solder joint looks like and have a multimeter ($3.95 at HF) and a decent soldering iron the average guy should be able to build this kit with no problems. The clear step by step instructions make it nearly foolproof. At my age, the resistor bands look a little foggy. However I sorted them out in a few minutes with the ohmmeter and every thing went together very easy. Dave has a simple test to preform before you install the expensive driver chips. This allows you to progress with confidence. John

This kit is very simple to assemble and does all the parts collecting for you. All you need is the case and the transformer. I used the big one ( the hammond transformer). Its well tailored to the max capability of the Hobbycnc Board yet has enough scrunch to drive a gecko on your z axis. I would not hesitate to purchase it again.
